This June, Tom and Pete will embark on a challenging 2000km bicycle ride from Vancouver in Canada down the Pacific coast to San Francisco climbing just under 20,000meters (more than twice the height of Everest) in the process. Some call this a moment of madness, others a midlife crisis. For us, it’s an opportunity for us to raise some awareness and hopefully some money for two charities that are close to our hearts; Mind (https://www.mind.org.uk) and KBRT (Home - Kevin Bell Trust).
Every year 1 in 4 of us will experience a challenge in our mental health. For most of us we, we are able to draw on the support we need though some are not so lucky. Every 60 seconds someone will call the ‘Mind’ mental health helpline for support and many reflect that they would simply have ‘given up’ if it hadn’t been for their support.
The Irish diaspora have spread to many corners of the globe and on occasion, tragedy strikes leaving families with enormous uncertainty and facing significant financial burden in repatriating their loved one back to home soil. KBRT was founded from similar tragedy and has helped thousands of families in similar circumstances through their entirely volunteer led organisation. As an Irish emigrant, their work is an enormous comfort.
