This fundraising endeavor will benefit our friend, Dan Bauerly. As many of you know, Dan was injured in an auto accident in May of 2000, leaving him wheelchair bound at the age of 24.
Over these past 18+ years, Dan has lived an active, productive, and inspiring life. One of the most important keys to his independent lifestyle is an adaptive wheelchair van, which he drives himself. These vehicles are very expensive and Dan’s income is limited. There are no special government programs that pay for such a vehicle, yet it is absolutely critical for independent living. These specialized vans are high maintenance, due in part to the harsh winters of Nebraska, but also due to the increased potential for electrical breakdowns. Over the past year, Dan’s 2011 Honda Odyssey has required multiple maintenance repairs, particularly to the automatic door and ramp, which allows him to enter/exit the van independently. These repairs have been costly for him personally, as well as for State agencies that have provided financial assistance. Currently, Dan is unable to get in and out of his van unassisted. The automatic door has not worked consistently for several months. In order to traverse through the course of a normal workday, Dan has to summon the help of people in the street or parking lot to help him get in/out of his vehicle. Numerous attempts to repair the problem have been unsuccessful. Furthermore, the State agency assisting him has informed him they will no longer provide financial assistance, as they have reached the limit in the amount they can contribute. It is time for a new van.
