I want to tell you about one of my favorite humans in the world.
I've taught music for 17 years, and I have had many students capture my heart over the years, but none so much as this one. He has been a student of mine for the past 7 years and I dare say, he is my favorite. Van "the man" has Pitt Hopkins and Autism. He has changed me as a teacher and the lens through which I see kids with special needs. The day I met Van we had an unspoken understanding. I was never going to let him off the hook or make any accommodations for him that allowed him to settle for less than what he was capable of. He tried. And many times I ignored his melt downs, or his over-stimulated responses, or his outbursts, 'cause I knew that music lived in his soul, more profoundly than I can even experience it myself. Van has perfect pitch. His understanding of theory and how music works exceeds mine. The struggle to accomplish simple tasks also exceeds that of others, but he still comes out on top. Every. Time. It's just who he is.
For the past several years Van has become obsessed with the harp. He watches videos on harps, he dreams about harps, he talks about harps, and he researches how to own a harp. A couple years ago it became so contagious that I even started dreaming about him getting a harp. Well, 2020 has been pretty crappy in so many ways, and I decided we need a happy ending. I want to get Van a harp.
If you were wondering, a concert harp can cost $18000-$60000. I am hoping to get him a student harp so he can continue his passion for music. Would you consider donating to get Van a harp? I promise, he is worth it!
