MILES CHARLES was born 26 weeks 3 days premature on July 31, 2014 and has an identical twin brother named Zachary who thankfully is a healthy boy. Unfortunately, MILES spent 130 days in the NICU weighing 1 pound 12 ounces at birth. He suffered bilateral three brain bleeds which resulted with Microcephaly, Cerebral Palsy, and Seizure Disorder called Infantile Spasms. He went through two rounds of steroids which was unsuccessful then tried Sabril medication treatments which was also unsuccessful, and finally went on ACTH injections for one month. The injections only helped for three months until the seizures returned. He now began the alternative treatment called Ketogenic Diet offered at CHOPS (Children's Hospital of Pediatrics in Philadelphia, PA). The seizures have reduced but they are still occurring daily. He is on several medications for seizures as well. As MILES grows, these seizures can change to different forms. Miles was on a vent for several weeks in the Nicu, and finally went home with oxygen. For many weeks in the beginning of Miles life my sister and brother in law were told Miles may not make it as he could not tolerate food. He wasn't urinating for several days and would become bloated. After retaining some much water for an extended amount of time caused a great deal of stress on the family. He eventually was able to urinate every couple of days or so as this scare lasted for three weeks. He was on epinephrine, dopamine, dobutamine to stabilize his blood pressure. He was also on phenobarb for seizures. At 2-1/2 years old, MILES does not sit up, crawl, walk, talk nor does he eat by mouth, only fed through a G-tube. MILES has had several surgeries in the past; eye surgery, back-to-back hernia repairs and G-tube placement done twice in less then 30 hours. A simple cold requires a hospital stay minimum three days because of his chronic lung disease, depleted immune system and floppy airway requiring suction, oxygen and nebulizer treatments. MILES also has 20/1000 vision which means he is legally blind. My sister whom spends many days in doctors offices and hospital only works part-time because of MILES, but also needs to offset the bills. MILES is outgrowing his car seat and now looking at wheelchair vans for him. He has poor head control and cannot face forward, the wheelchair van could keep him rear facing and safe. These vans cost approximately $60,000-70,000 and the payments would be an enormous financing burden. Getting MILES a wheelchair van is a major priority and an absolute necessity in order to get him to doctors, therapy, hospitals, etc. Little MILES is one of the strongest boys I know. I am blessed he is my nephew. He has gone through way too much in his short life. If you could please find it in your heart to help in anyway possible, it would be greatly appreciated. My sister and brother-in-law desperately need this special van for the sake of MILES CHARLES. Thank you for taking the time to hear his story. Please re-post and share this link.
