Lieve mensen,

Mijn naam is Jimmy Noldus, ik ben 23 jaar en woon in Venlo. Lang heb ik getwijfeld of ik mijn verhaal met de buitenwereld wilde delen. Maar wanneer je maandenlang elke nacht wakker ligt van de jeuk en van de pijn, wordt het antwoord uiteindelijk vanzelf duidelijk.

Het voelt ongemakkelijk om mezelf zo kwetsbaar op te stellen – niet alleen tegenover mensen die mij kennen, maar ook tegenover mensen die ik misschien nooit zal ontmoeten. Toch geloof ik dat juist in die kwetsbaarheid kracht schuilt. Soms is het delen van je verhaal niet alleen helend voor jezelf, maar ook een lichtpunt voor iemand anders.

Al mijn hele leven, drieëntwintig jaar, leef ik met eczeem. Het is een constante metgezel geweest – soms stilletjes aanwezig, soms luid en allesoverheersend.

Van buiten zie je misschien slechts wat rode plekken of een droge huid. Maar daarachter gaat een wereld schuil van jeuk, pijn, slapeloze nachten en momenten van pure uitputting.

Jarenlang probeerde ik mijn eczeem te onderdrukken met hormoonzalven. Ze gaven tijdelijke verlichting, maar diep vanbinnen wist ik dat het geen genezing was – alleen uitstel. Ik raakte gevangen in een vicieuze cirkel, waarin mijn huid steeds afhankelijker werd van iets dat mij nooit écht zou helen.

Op 1 mei 2025 besloot ik te stoppen. Geen hormoonzalven meer. Alleen mijn lichaam, mijn huid en het lange pad naar herstel. Maar die keuze bracht me in een storm die ik niet had voorzien. Mijn huid werd onrustiger dan ooit. Rode plekken, droge plekken, brandende plekken, opengebarsten plekken en een jeuk die soms ondraaglijk is.

Ik bevind me nu in het proces genaamd Topical Steroid Withdrawal – een proces waarin je huid en je hele systeem moet afkicken van hormoonzalven. Dat brengt niet alleen jeuk en pijn met zich mee, maar ook extreem droge huid, rode huid, brandende huid, opengebarste huid en een ontwricht immuumsysteem.

Toch is er hoop. In Thailand bestaat er een behandeling voor eczeem, genaamd Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP)-therapie. Deze behandeling richt zich op het stimuleren van huidgeneratie. Het activeert processen in de huid die helpen bij het groeien van nieuwe huidcellen en het herstellen van beschadigd weefsel.

Om in aanmerking te komen voor deze behandeling, heb ik mijn volledige medische historie en foto’s van de huidige staat van mijn huid moeten delen met de arts in Thailand. Op basis daarvan is bepaald dat ik minimaal 12 maanden in behandeling moet om kans te maken op herstel.

Deze aanpak geeft mij een sprankje toekomstperspectief – een mogelijkheid om mijn huid en mijn leven terug te winnen. Maar deze behandeling is ongelooflijk kostbaar, en daarom zamel ik geld in om deze kans op herstel werkelijkheid te maken.

Daarnaast heb ik door het stoppen met hormoonzalven een kale plek op mijn hoofd gekregen. Dit is een bijzondere maar helaas niet onmogelijke bijwerking van het proces waar ik nu doorheen ga. Het brengt veel onzekerheden met zich mee. Daarom wil ik – naast de CAP-behandeling, die absoluut voorrang heeft – ook sparen voor een haartransplantatie, zodat ik me weer zelfverzekerder kan voelen.

Het is fysiek vermoeiend, het is mentaal vermoeiend maar diep vanbinnen voel ik dat dit de enige weg is naar écht herstel.

Dear friends,

My name is Jimmy Noldus, I’m 23 years old and I live in Venlo. For a long time, I doubted whether I wanted to share my story with the world. But when you spend months lying awake every night because of the itch and the pain, the answer eventually becomes clear.

It feels uncomfortable to make myself this vulnerable – not only in front of the people who know me, but also to those I may never meet. Yet I believe that there is strength to be found in vulnerability. Sometimes, sharing your story is not only healing for yourself, but also a light for someone else.

All my life, twenty-three years, I have lived with eczema. It has been a constant companion – sometimes quietly present, sometimes loud and overwhelming.

On the outside, you might only see a few red patches or dry skin. But behind that lies a world of itch, pain, sleepless nights, and moments of sheer exhaustion.

For years, I tried to suppress my eczema with steroid creams. They gave me temporary relief, but deep down I knew it wasn’t a cure – only a delay. I became trapped in a vicious cycle, where my skin grew increasingly dependent on something that would never truly heal me.

On May 1st, 2025, I decided to stop. No more steroid creams. Just my body, my skin, and the long road to recovery. But that choice threw me into a storm I hadn’t anticipated. My skin became more restless than ever. Red patches, dry patches, burning patches, cracked skin, and an itch that is sometimes unbearable.

I am now going through the process called Topical Steroid Withdrawal – a process in which your skin and entire system must detox from steroid creams. It brings not only itch and pain, but also extremely dry skin, red skin, burning skin, cracked skin, and a disrupted immune system.

Still, there is hope. In Thailand, there is a treatment for eczema called Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) therapy. This treatment focuses on stimulating skin regeneration. It activates processes in the skin that help new skin cells grow and repair damaged tissue.

To qualify for this treatment, I had to share my complete medical history and photos of my current skin condition with the doctor in Thailand. Based on that, it was determined that I will need at least 12 months of treatment to have a chance at recovery.

This approach gives me a glimpse of a future – a possibility to regain my skin and my life. But this treatment is incredibly expensive, and that is why I am raising funds to make this chance at healing a reality.

In addition, by stopping the use of steroid creams I have developed a bald spot on my head. This is an unusual, yet unfortunately not impossible side effect of the process I am going through. It brings a lot of insecurities with it. That is why – alongside the CAP treatment, which absolutely takes priority – I also want to save for a hair transplant, so I can feel confident again.
