Valli's rare Thyroid Cancer

Hey everyone,

I am so embarrassed to even need to make this.

Our beautiful rescued greyhound Valli (7 years old) has been quite unwell. We took her to our regular Veterinary Clinic last week.

Blood work showed high thyroid levels (Hyperthyroidism) which is extremely rare in dogs and especially Greyhounds.

We were immediately reffered to SASH North Ryde to see their Internal Medicine specialist Dr Sophia Tzannes.

Today 1 July 2026, Internal Medicine did a CT Scan on Valli. This cost $3,788 out of pocket.

They have confirmed Valli has a thyroid mass which is guaranteed to be cancer/malignant.

The CT showed the mass is less than 5cm, mobile and has not yet spread to other structures or organs. Meaning this surgery would be curative and completely get rid of the cancer.

The surgeon has quoted us a further $9,500 - $11,800 for her thyroidectomy and hospital stay on top of what we have paid already.

Her surgery needs to be completed by Dr Martin Havlicek who is an soft tissue oncology surgeon.

We have called around, no other veterinary clinic will operate on her given how rare it is and the bleeding complications that could arise.

We have no other choice but to stick with SASH.

With pet insurance rejecting the claim, being on Maternity leave with a 9 week old and 2.5 year old, plus the $3,800 already spent we don't have enough funds to cover the whole surgery and without it Vallis cancer will spread. There is no other treatment options for us.
I have a $500 limit on vetpay and being on Maternity Leave they won't up the limit.

We love her so much, and she deserves this so much.

We have a 2.5 year old who is neurodiverse who absolutely thinks the world of Valli and wouldn't cope without her.

If you could please find it in your heart to either donate or share our page.

**We have pet insurance, but they have denied the claim stating it is not a covered illness. We have contacted them and lodged a dispute and made contact with Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) in the mean time.
