What started as a routine back strain quickly escalated into a devastating life-altering spinal injury that left our sweet girl Valkyrie paralyzed in both hind legs.
Due to the rapid escalation of her spinal injury, she had to undergo an emergency MRI and an invasive spinal surgery. Without either of these interventions we were left with two realities: she would either be paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of her life or we would have to consider the unthinkable alternative of euthanasia. Neither of which felt like an option for us.
Making the decision to put her through an invasive spinal surgery, was not easy, but we couldn't fathom denying her the chance of returning to her normal life and being the same girl we all know and love.
While the surgery was successful, we are now navigating a new and challenging reality. We are grieving the life she once had while managing the sudden, overwhelming costs of emergency care. The road to recovery is long, and the specialized post operative care required to help Valkyrie regain her mobility is extensive.
We know that this past year has been emotionally and financially difficult for everyone. If you aren't in a position to donate, please know that sharing Valkyrie’s story is just as valuable to us. Watching her go through this has been incredibly heartbreaking, and frankly with the unknowns of her recovery, we are scared. We don’t yet know exactly what the next few months will look like, but we are committed to helping her and giving her the best care possible; even if it takes months of patience and persistence.
