Today’s struggles are real for so many families, and in this moment we ask you to consider supporting the needs of one very special family in Bay Area, California: the Valenzuela-Marin family.
This family of four has endured struggle after struggle and the parents, Maria and Luis, are relentless with ensuring their children’s needs are met, especially that of their 12-year-old son. Their son is diagnosed with a neurological disorder, Smith Magenis Syndrome, and Autism. The pandemic was just the beginning of an unpredictable journey of emotional distress and financial need. Soon after the shelter-in-place mandate, Maria and Luis lost their janitorial jobs and when they could, they took on small, short-term jobs.
And then, the unthinkable: In May of 2021, Luis suffered a massive heart attack and was hospitalized. He remained in a coma for more than 10 days before surgery. Doctors informed the family Luis was not going to make it, and invited them to say their goodbyes. Luis’ son, devastated, approached his father saying, “It’s not your time to go.” Soon after, Luis miraculously started showing signs of life and woke up. He returned home after a lengthy hospital stay, with Maria staying home to assist him with his recuperation.
Just 4 short months later, in August 2021, Maria was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She is currently undergoing intensive chemotherapy and is scheduled to have surgery followed by radiation. Needless to say, Maria is devastated she cannot work, care for her family, and in particular, support her son. She is his true advocate.
The Valenzuela-Marin family is facing their trials with strength, courage, and faith. They are proud of the ways in which they have always provided for their family. Today, they are in dire need of support, given that they have begun to fall behind on rent and are now facing astronomically high medical bills.
