A sentence we never thought we would be writing...
In 2015 Gladys and her family were blessed with an amazing daughter named Vaitiare “the dew of the flower” … She is a vibrant, smart and beautiful soul. If you meet her, you’d quickly learn just how infectious her smile is; it illuminates every room she enters. Vaitiare is a sociable & happy chatterbox - not one to sit still for too long, she loves making new friends, dancing and singing and enjoys wrestling with her brothers.
A lump near her elbow initially thought to have been a result of an active, energetic & boisterous five year old’s daily activities turned from a GP recommended ultrasound in February 2021 to an immediate referral to the Queensland Children’s Hospital.
At the age of just 5 years, on the 25th of March 2021 Vaitiare was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Children's Cancer called Ewing's Sarcoma.
This is a form of childhood cancer that has required Vaitiare to immediately undergo a lengthy course of treatment, inclusive of extensive chemotherapy treatment, multiple surgeries to ensure local control and possible radiation.
Although her length of treatment will depend on her response to treatment and recover periods, it is expected to span over at least the next 12 months.
Within her first week of admission alone, Vaitiare has already endured so much: MRI, CAT & PET Scans, Bone Marrow Aspiration, frozen Biopsy procedure & additional Ultrasounds.
This will undoubtedly be a long battle for this heartbroken family. There are expenses they will incur - Gladys Vaitare's mother has taken extended time off work to focus on her daughters treatment & unfortunately there is no access to government income support for NZ citizen's residing in Australia under SCV.
