Hello to all family, friends, and acquaintances!
Our mother (Mary Jane aka Auntie Mary) was diagnosed with Oral Squamous Cell Cancer stage 4. While we’ll know a little more in the coming weeks here’s what we do know: Stage 4 with the location and her specific type of cancer can be curable because it is localized. The immediate solution is significant surgery (possible removal of the lower portion of her left jaw & teeth), as well as 6 weeks of radiation. Chemotherapy may also be used but that is one of the things we won’t know about until after the surgery.
With the upcoming surgery on today (December 10th), along with the many treatments and therapy to follow, there is quite a road ahead and I know you are all so generous and will want to be of service to our parents. Here is a little guidance if you are unsure how you can best assist during this time.
Because smells are a big trigger for her migraines, we’re asking that you please don’t send any flowers to our mother Mary Jane (not in the hospital or at home). Unfortunately, she can’t have them (or anything with fragrance - this includes lotions, perfumes, etc). Flowers are such a lovely gesture and can typically brighten someone’s day, but regrettably, in this case, they have the opposite effect.
Also because of our mother’s surgery (and location of cancer) please skip on sending any food items like cookies, fruit baskets, or edible arrangements etc… Unfortunately, she will have difficulty eating for some time and a majority of the things she will be able to eat will have to be made by hand (mostly in a blender).
If you want to send any presents or support here are some examples of things that would be welcomed and cherished… gas cards (Shell, Irving, and Mobile are the ones local to them), Whole Foods gift cards, and Amazon gift cards. With treatment, having the means for the basics (gas, groceries, creature comforts, etc) will be crucial.
If you aren’t sure what to do but would like to show support, please donate to this GoFundMe and leave our mother (and father) some warm words of encouragement. Please do not feel that you must do or give anything! This is just a friendly guide for you all as well as a way to keep you posted during this journey.
