In the middle of the night, Ben awoke to find flames engulfing his shed, which housed all of his tools for his day work and property maintenance, as well as the electrical and battery systems that allowed him to connect to his solar system to achieve off the grid living. This is a devastating setback, as it impacts his abilities to work efficiently and continue building his sustainable Earthship home, and the systems contained in the shed helped power his property.

Ben is now faced with the task of working with the county to identify a process for cleaning up the waste, which is potentially hazardous, time consuming, and costly. He will also need to acquire the tools that allow him to work and continue building, and recreate the systems that granted him the ability to live in his remote location.

For those of you less familiar with Ben or who haven’t been following his efforts, he has been building an Earthship on his property while residing in his grandfather’s Airstream trailer. Earthships are homes that use reclaimed materials and thoughtful engineering to allow for sustainable off the grid living. Ben is a huge promotor of sustainable living and models a life that is considerate of our world’s future well being. After years of helping the Earthship community grow through teaching and contributing to their projects, Ben began building his own Earthship. This project will be on hold until he can acquire the tools lost to the fire.

Those of us who do know Ben know that he is a thoughtful and caring friend or family member. His company will reward you with smiles, laughs, and inspiring conversations. We also know that Ben is not the type of person to ask for help because he doesn’t want to inconvenience others.
