Moving Close To Family

Update 1/18/2021
This is the final update for the campaign to raise funds to help with moving expenses. I’m incredibly grateful to announce that we reached and surpassed the goal! Next week the big move begins with a two day journey, and two half days for loading, unloading, and setup. I will document the process, and share my results in a video, paper, and presentation.

Update 1/9/2021
Thanks to the generosity of 46 caring souls, we’ve reached 94% of our goal. That’s more than $102 per donation, which is great! I’m really excited, and appreciate the opportunity for the new start!

Update 1/5/2021
Today is the 25th Anniversary of the traumatic spinal cord injury that left my paralyzed from the shoulders down! In the quarter century since I became a quad, I’ve learned that it’s okay, because if you are reading this, you are familiar with the everyday challenges a quad faces. Now, you might be able to inspire a quad in your area, by telling them that the possibility of a productive, meaningful existence is still attainable. Your support inspires me to continue the struggle! Thank you so much for the opportunity!

Update 1/1/2021
Happy New Year 2021, Good Bye 2020!

Today I put in my 30 day notice to vacate at my current apartment community. The travel itinerary is mapped out, and Brother in Law and Youngest Sister scheduled time from work to help with the move. I did have to pay a $1890 penalty for breaking my lease 3 months early. Luckily, thanks to your generosity, I was able to handle the setback.

God Bless You All!

Update 12/20/2020
A Huge thank you to everybody for helping me reach my minimum goal! The apartment is secured, and travel has been arranged! The final piece of the puzzle is the expense related to my care, including a bare minimum of 30 hours/week with a CNA, and 4-6 hours/week with a RN ($17/hr and $33/hr respectively). My previous goal included 1 week of care only, but there has been such an outpouring of support, that I humbly up my goal to 3 weeks of care ($675/week) and hopefully Washington State takes over in less than a month.

Update 12/16/2020:
Just put my reservation in for the rental van, and paid $840 to secure my moving time to be during the week starting 1/22/2021. I anticipate having to pay an additional $560 at drop-off for miles traveled ($0.35/mi). The Uhaul will be around $350.

Update 12/11/2020:
Great news, I just signed a lease for a beautiful 1 bd apartment in a new building, close to 'everything' in Bellingham's Fairhaven neighborhood. I put $880 down and I have to pay $1175 when I move in. I'm so happy and excited for the change! Special thanks to Julie and Noah for helping find and secure the place.

Update 12/4/2020:
I updated my goal today to take into account that I would prefer to rent a van and drive instead of flying. I'm asking for less help with caregiver pay, because the transition from CA to WA will be weeks, hopefully not months.

Hi Everybody!

I really need your help escaping the city, to be closer to my family and the fresh air of the Washington State countryside. The Capitol of CA is full of virus patients and believe it or not, racism was just declared a public health emergency. I can’t delay any longer,  because holding on to the hope that I can find work in Northern CA has not panned out.

My next home will be a studio for half the rent as my current place, in the same town as my 2 sisters, brother in law, niece, and nephew.

If you guys can help me with some of the expenses, I can start the next chapter of my life. I can teach remotely as needed until schools open up again.

The biggest expense will be paying caregivers out of pocket ($17/hr) for a few weeks, until WA Medicaid takes over. The second major expense is of course 1st and last month’s rent plus security deposit ($2500). Other expenses include a wheelchair van rental ($120/day, 4 days), fuel, and a Uhaul ($400).

Every $ counts, please share a few if you can.

Thank you, and God Bless!

Yours truly,
Jesse Leaman Ph.D.
