Thank you for reading our story! My name is Michaela and I am the new dance team coach at Centaurus High School in Lafayette. I have coached for many years and 20 years ago this month I attended my first practice as a Centaurus dancer myself! I took the job as head coach of this team because I thought it would be fun to coach again, and a great way to give back to the community. I had NO IDEA what I was in for. This team is made up of dynamic, funny, hard-working, and smart girls. They want to dance to have a way to express themselves, be connected to their school and be part of a team...a family. I have known them for two weeks and in those two weeks I have been humbled beyond belief because of their great passion shining through their personal strife. This team has had a rough start the past two years (after several years of no team at all) and many of them don't have the financial capability to participate in this really expensive sport.
Money shouldn't dictate whether or not you can do what you love, especially when doing what you love helps to keep your grades up, keeps you out of trouble and gives you an outlet for managing stress. So that's why we're here. If I could afford it, I would pay for it all myself.
We're here because this team needs a fresh, shiny, new start and to feel the support of the community behind them as they break down barriers and begin a new legacy at Centaurus. These girls need to go to their FIRST sleepaway UDA summer camp and learn the skills neccesary to be a solid dance team in the state. They need new uniforms that they can feel confident wearing when they take the field at halftime or the floor at the State Championships.
The team is committed to fundraising and we will do plenty of selling of goods, volunteering for donations, and mini pom clinics, but these efforts will hardly put a dent in the approximately $1,000 each needed just to get the basics. My hope is that the dance world, the local community members, and past alums of Centaurus will find it in their hearts to donate to this worthy team as we embark on a new beginning...
