Our beautiful little man Cooper is now five years old and from a young age was diagnosed with hip displasia, he was from a backyard breeder and had no papers, we couldn't resist getting him :-) We knew this was likely to come however, did not know the extent of the damage or exact surgery that would  have to be performed. Yesterday the specialist performed Radiographs and found that he has severe bilaterial hip displasia with advanced secondary osteoarthritis and as a secondary consequence lower limb deformities. The specialist strongly recommends a full hip replacement in his right hip as the damage is more extensive, with complete cartlidge wastage. There is over a 90% chance after this surgery Coop will have a completely functional and pain free right hip and it is unlikely the second hip will have to undergo surgery, it could increase his life expentency to 10-12 years old :-) A smaller surgery excision arthroplasty is an option to improve comfort but he would likely have persisting and possibly worse rotational instability. No surgery would likely mean we would have to put him down in the not too far future as a result of his pain. This is not an option for me as most of you know Coops is my everything. The hip surgery will cost around $6000, I know an insane amount, but those of you who know and love Cooper, know that you couldn't have a more beautiful soul or perfect dog as your pet.
