A few days ago I was denied an opportunity for a home loan because of my sexuality.

In the year 2009, I served my country and eventually was kicked out of the Coast Guard for being gay. During my time in South Carolina aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Dallas, I faced harassment, and eventually feared for my safety. One day while walking on the pier I was told that people like me would get lynched. I eventually had to be escorted to my car, and months later I received an honorable discharge for “homosexual admission”.

Just a few days ago I had to relive my trauma of discrimination.

As of 4 days ago, I was in the process of buying a home through the VA. After looking at a few homes with my realtor I had found the most perfect living space. I walked into the home, and I immediately knew that this was going to be an opportunity of a lifetime. I even laid in the homeowner’s bed and envisioned myself waking up in that environment. Everything felt right.

After a few ups and downs, I was notified that my offer was accepted. My realtor messaged me stating, “Congratulations, you are now in escrow”. Being a first-time homebuyer I felt that the house was mine. I jumped in excitement and called my Mom to let her know that I found a home in this very difficult market.

I sit here now after a long week of battles and continue to reflect.

I have spoken to Congresswoman Matsui’s team and stated my case for discrimination towards the VA. I was informed this case would be on their priority list! I have contacted senators and was told by lawyers this is a Civil Rights case. I have written to the LA Times, and have been connected with LGBT Veteran advocacy groups to get this denial appealed.

I NEED YOUR HELP

After sharing my story with a few people I was contacted by a broker who previously served. He listened to my story and decided to help me during this process. He said firmly “We are getting you this damn house”, and I believed him.

At the moment I am waiting for my appeal to process and had to take out an FHA home loan (financially this loan is different). I already created a solution for the down payment cost, and am very close to having all of the money needed for my closing cost. I am asking for help because this house will change my life. I am currently 4,000 dollars short of closing costs and am asking for friends and family to help with any amount. Even 1 dollar will help me get closer to getting into this home.

I will continue to fight this civil rights issue. I have already shared my story with my students in the hope to inspire them to advocate for problems in society that need fixing.
