For the past 15 years, Phoenix High School Cross Country and Track & Field has directed most of our fundraising efforts in a manner which supports running and envisions races as a means in which to unify communities. This is often by hosting or in some other manner supporting races which are open to all. The largest of these is the Ashland 4th of July Run. Normally we raise enough funds that the team account can pay for everything and relieve students of any expenses. Due to Covid-19, we are unable to do this prior to the start of our competitive season in the fall. We would appreciate if you consider making a tax-deductible donation.
Phoenix High School in southern Oregon has a population of about 650 students, 52% are of minority ethnicity, 7 languages are spoken and we are of high poverty (80% qualify for free/reduced lunch). Our graduation cohort rate is 93% (meaning 93% of students who start as freshman together graduate together four years later) and over 56% of our students are enrolled in a four-year college a year after graduation. Our teams reflect these demographics. Our school district reaches into three towns and our school serves to unify these communities. The Cross Country team typically numbers between 35-45 participants, while Track & Field had 90 last year before the season was cancelled due to Covid-19.
High school sports are pricy. For example: Singlet/shorts per kid cost $60, while race entries often range between $150-$250 a meet. On the track, a single hurdle can cost well over $100 (and at least 80 are needed for a meet!) and few equipment cost under $200. A pole vault pit alone costs over $22,000!
