Ria Pohlman was born August 8th, 2012. It was one of the best days of our lives. We couldn't have been more excited to be adding a baby girl to our family. However, her second day in this world became one of our darkest days when the doctors discovered she had a very serious heart condition, Critical Aortic Stenosis. She was immediately taken by life flight to the Children's Hospital of Minneapolis where they performed a balloon valvuloplasty to open up the aortic valve in her heart. After some surgery related complications and a ten day hospital stay we finally were able to take our baby home. She has been monitored closely with regular Cardiology visits, blood pressure meds, echocardiograms and EKGs. The doctors have been warning us for the last two and a half years that the time would come when Ria's aortic valve would become torn up beyond repair, from leaking, and an open heart surgery would be our only option. Sadly, that time has come. Ria will undergo a very complex OHS called the Ross proceedure on June 11th. The Ross Proceedure is basically a double vlave replacement where they take out the aortic valve, remove her pulmonary valve and put it in the aortic spot and then replace the pulmonary vlave with an artificial one that will need to be replaced 2-3 more times as her heart grows. She will be in the hosptial for approximately 2 weeks if there are no complications and then at home recovering for another 4-6 weeks. This is obviously a very expensive surgery and, although we have insurance (thank God!), there are tons of expenses coming our way and being out of work to be with our daughter is going to be a huge financial burden on us.
Thank you so much to everyone for your love, prayers and support!! Anyone who knows Ria knows that she is one tough little cookie!
