This is my mom, Danielle Espinoza, and she is the strongest person I know.
Those of you who know my mom knows she's a strong, spunky, and a feisty individual. If not, here's a little introduction to the little lady whom I also call Elenore. She has gone through more hardships than most and all while doing so, still being the best mom she could to me. Growing up it wasn't easy being introduced to her new way of life. And I know that her first diagnosis of end-stage renal failure was one of the worst days of her life. And little did we know, that was the start to a life long journey of new health issues, more doctor visits, many surgeries, and a lot of scares. Despite all the setbacks my mom has experienced she's always been there for me to be my best friend and take me on all the adventures she could think of... like many bike rides or drives along the canyons, or even night walks through the cemeteries that used to terrify me. My best memories growing up are those that my mom would always think out of the box and test my abilities mental or physical. As a kid, I was always her little tail, from following her around at work when she worked at a nursing home and having to sing to all the old ladies to going with her to doctor visits and daily dialysis treatments where I would befriend all her nurses. As I got older I realize there's not a thing I would change about my mom. She is the truest definition I know of
not giving up.
As most of you all know my mom is not new health difficulties and having to make
frequent trips to doctor appointments, check ups, and other health set backs. For the past couple years she has had complications with what her doctors thought was an infection inside her bladder. They put her on every antibiotic you can think of and nothing worked for the pain and complications just got worse and worse. This past April she thought she was sick with the flu on top of the supposed infection her body was continuously trying to fight. Thanks to covid, other tests for her "unknown" problem kept being postponed. One morning she woke up to having bloody urine. Spending years living on dialysis and no functioning kidneys has left my mom scared of problems reoccurring from the past. With a bunch of other tests and an ultrasound later we found out that her bladder was actually 95% covered in masses that we learned was actually cancer.
Her cancer is common in those with (kidney) transplants and is called large B-cell lymphoma. It is solely located inside her bladder and hasn't spread throughout her lymphatic system. Luckily, despite the time passed that it was thought to be an infection, it is only Stage 1. Her treatment started on Rituximab, which isn't extremely harsh to the individual and doesn't come with all the complications of the commonly imagined cancer patient. However, that took a turn when we found out that, though the treatment helped the cancer not to spread, it wasn't fighting it to go away either. Her next option was R-CHOP (Rituximab, Cyclophosphamide, Hydroxydaunorubicin, Oncovin, Predisone) and is an aggressive form/combination of chemotherapy.
She has already had a handful of treatments and it has definitely made a noticeable impact to her body. She is in constant nerve pain, swollen, unable to sleep or rest for any extended amount of time and the list could go on. I've decided to set this up to help with some finances for my mom including help with rent, medical needs/necessities, items for comfort for daily living, and transport to and from treatments and weekly doctor visits. So far everything just listed has been covered out of pocket and I have had to take some time off work as well. During the past few months, there have been hard times and despite what you see things have not been the slightest of easy and there is still a long road ahead. I know many of you have reached out for ways to help and we appreciate it so much. Anything helps. Thank you
