As some of you may know, our 'perfect' little girl Sadie, has a medical condition called, Weak Bladder Sphincter (Urinary Incontinence). Urinary incontinence is a weakening of the sphincter that controls the emptying of the bladder. To put it plainly, Sadie leaks urine uncontrollably while resting. Unfortuantely, we do not know the exact cause of this problem, but we have been very lucky to have an amazing vet who loves Sadie as her own and has helped us every way possible to get this issue under control. Sadie has been on Estrogen pills and phenylpropanolamine pills, from a very young age, which stimulate the nervous system and increase tone in the bladder sphincter. To our misfortune, the medicine is no longer working and we must look into other ways to help fix our baby girl.
Our next option is Surgery, a very expensive surgery that is based out of the University of Florida called, Hydraulic urethral occlusion. Basically, this is a silicon cuff placed around the urethra and is filled with saline to provide mechanical obstruction to urine flow through the urethra. The saline and resistance to flow is adjusted by a port that will be placed just under her skin.
This may seem like a cosmetic surgery to most but we assure you that we would not come to you if it were not having an extreme negative impact on our lives. We are constantly monitoring Sadie's leaking & constantly finding urine puddles around our house (ruining furniture, hardwood flooring, etc).
With that being said, we come to you fully humbled & slightly embarrassed by our misfortune hoping that you will find it in your heart to help out our poor little girl. Every little bit helps!
