Dear friends and family,

If this page has found you, then it is because you are lucky enough to have known my father, the indomitable and much loved Don Webster.  You have also come to know that he lost his brave fight with cancer on December 10, 2018. He was 71  years young.

My wonderful father was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer that attacks the soft tissue - peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma.  For him, it began as nothing more than a small bump on his arm that caused absolutely no pain. The issue, however, was that the bump kept on growing.

A biopsy was ordered, and came back as inconclusive.  Soon after this event, my dad began having extreme back pain.  An MRI was ordered, and showed a mass on his spine.  A biopsy of that came back as a ‘non-malignant mass’ – meaning not life threatening.

Our lives soon became possessed by this cancer – and our minutes were spent literally holding our breath as we rode the roller-coaster of doctors fanatically trying to identify the type of cancer, stop it or at least control its growth through my dads body, and control his unimaginable painful symptoms.  However, every effort was more of a ‘lets try this’ versus a statement of confidence that what was being done would have some chance of prolonging his life, and yes… cure him.

My father’s cancer was diagnosed on December 1, 2018 and he passed away on December 10th.  It was exactly 7  grueling weeks from the onset of symptoms to his tragic death caused by what doctors were calling: peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma.

It was sheer hell to watch my amazing dad, so bravely and gracefully struggle with gruesome and and inescapable pain and other cancer symptom. My life during those dark and endless days was consumed with the panic and fear of knowing that my father, my emotional rock and best friend was dying, and I was helpless to stop the inevitable. …. and I was dying inside right along with him.

There are two types of malignant sarcomas, osteosarcoma, and soft tissue sarcoma.  Osteosarcoma is better known (and funded), as it is the cancer that Terry Fox had.

Soft tissue sarcomas are rare, and can be divided into over 50 sub-groups.  Because of their rarity, they are hard to diagnose, and difficult to treat.  They are often described as aggressive, and prognosis is poor.  Most soft tissue sarcomas are treated with surgery, which often leads to amputations, and radiation.  Many types of this cancer do not respond well to chemotherapy.
My dad had surgery to remove the tumour on his arm, which involved the removal of his tricep, but by then it had already metastasized to his spine.
The difficulty in diagnosing this cancer, stole my dads’ chance for any type of treatment.  He was unable to receive either radiation or chemotherapy.

During my father’s cancer journey, I came to meet so many extraordinary people whose own battle against cancer was fought valiantly not only by the patient… but their whole family and everyone who loved them.  What I learned was that cancer has an epic effect on everyone in our lives. I think almost every single one of my family and friends has been affected in some way or another by my father’s death.  What I learned is that cancer is a monster … Its wrath is immediate and quite terrifying, and tattoos your soul . That is why it is SO  important for me to try and help in any small way that I can.

It breaks my heart that diagnostic and treatment options failed my dad when he so desperately needed them.  I am asking for your compassion by making a donation on my GoFundMe Page to the “The Don Webster Legacy OF Life Memorial Fund ”.  While I could not save my father, my hope is that our money, can impact the research that would work to find symptom management options, better diagnostic tools,  and an eventual cure for the cancer that took my father’s life.

Ultimately, my dream is that no other family would have to go through the pain that we have, and that there will be hope, options, and a cure for others who are facing this terrible disease.

It is for this reason that I have chosen to create a GoFundMe page and donate all the proceeds to the Sarcoma Cancer Foundation of Canada, in order to help in the fight to eradicate a rare cancer called sarcoma.

The Sarcoma Cancer Foundation of Canada is a wonderful, volunteer run, national organization, whose mandate it is to work with Canada’s leading research institutions in their effort to eradicate sarcoma cancers.  They also connect patients and their families with the best medical information and community resources, all for the goal of helping to ease the process of dealing with a sarcoma diagnosis and treatment.

All our money raised will go directly to this Foundation, and you can be sure that the money raised will be put towards the research required to find a cure for this cancer, as well as, offering support programs for both patients and their loved ones, as they all make this journey from diagnosis to cure, and sadly for some, to death.  I believe that research can cure cancer – let's make this statement a reality!
