Help Rape Survivor Afford Care
Donation protected
My first weekend of college in 2011 I was raped. It was a painful, humiliating, confusing, and traumatizing experience. It was not just emotionally painful, but physically painful as well.
Since this incident, I regularly experience intense pelvic, lower back, and hip pain. I also have become prone to UTIs and between October 2019 and May 2020, I was on 6 or 7 antibiotics. I recently learned that the cause of my suffering might be due to a pelvic floor disorder and consulted with a pelvic floor physical therapist. Based on her exam, my symptoms, a pelvic cyst that is typically associated with sites of internal trauma, and my history of sexual assault, she stated with confidence that I have a pelvic floor disorder that likely began with the rape in 2011.
Survivors are entitled to some state funds for treatment, but a universal requirement is to file a police report and press charges. Often, a survivor has 72 hours from their assault to press charges in order to qualify for funds. You also have to win your case, an unlikely outcome in America.
As I never involved the police and August 28, 2021, will be the 10 year anniversary of my assault, I have no rights as a survivor to ask the state for assistance in paying for my care.
I desperately want to continue treatment, but my PT does not accept insurance. I am hoping to raise the total cost it will take for 8 sessions (the minimum number of sessions I will require), plus her consultation, as well as therapeutic devices I must use at home.
Her initial consult is $275
Sessions are $225 each
My at-home therapeutic devices have thus far been $50. I anticipate more costs.
I am also spending money on public transportation from my home in Brooklyn to her office in Manhattan.
I need help, as paying for her treatment means I will have a net negative income for approximately 3 months. I do not make a lot of money and have many other medical expenses for mental health treatment as well as another chronic pain condition that developed after the rape. Needless to say, covering this therapy will be hard.
Thanks for reading my story. Thanks for helping in whatever way you can, even if it's just a dollar or a kind note. It all means the world.
