Help MJ Get Medical Care

Hi family it’s Rue,

I am helping MJ with this fundraiser and need your help to show up for this incredibly resilient 23 year old.

I met MJ while I was out one night doing my street outreach trying to connect people to secure housing and other needed services. I have been in the community for over 10 years doing outreach and have never encountered a situation like this.

His story is a hard story to hear. I felt compelled to help him.

MJ is a refugee from a war torn country. He was living in what is the most affordable housing in his community. This neighborhood is unsafe and is not meant for human habitation. There is no water or electricity in most of the homes. The property consists of abandoned or dilapidated buildings. The community has been trying to repair or remove the property but no progress has been made.

He was sitting in his living room when 2 individuals came into his unit and opened fire. MJ was only living in his new unit for a few days before he was shot. He was one of 6 people shot on Mother’s Day. He sustained serious injuries from being shot. He is now paralyzed from the waist down. He lost his brother and best friend that day including 2 other family members who were there to have a house warming with him.

MJ was excited about his new apartment but that joy was quickly taken and he is working on rebuilding his life and regaining his health.

MJ went to Minnesota to seek medical attention because he was not getting the proper health care in Georgia. He was put out by the family who was helping him and is homeless on the streets with his 21 year old sister. His sister is his caretaker so it’s been hard to get emergency shelter for them because most shelters are gender restricted and they don’t qualify for family shelter.

I have been unsuccessful in getting hotel vouchers for them. My husband and I have been paying for hotels because we are not getting the help we need.

He needs a new wheelchair because the one he has is not designed for someone with his level of injury. He comes from a family with limited means so that’s all they could get at the time.

I will be able to stabilize them and get safe, secure, and accessible housing but need help while I do this.

Please donate to get him food, temporary housing, transportation to his appointments, and medical care in the mean time.

I have exhausted all resources for this family and we need all the help we can get.

MJ is the strongest young man I know. He has made tremendous progress and his dream is to walk again. He has beaten every odd so far. Let’s get MJ walking by his birthday.
