Avery's Story:
On May 31, after Avery went to the doctor for some pain in her head; X-rays were completed and came back abnormal. After this things happened rapidly; more referrals, more X-rays, more abnormal results.
By June 4, she was at Children’s Hospital with an oncology team, facing more X-rays, plus CT scans, MRIs, blood work, biopsies ... After weeks of completing what seemed like an endless list of scans, screenings and surgeries, Avery has been diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocystosis (LCH).
LCH is rare under-researched cancer type disease. Through all the testing she has endured, they have determined her disease is limited to the bones, which is the best case scenario for this disease. However, multiple areas of her skull and pelvis are effected; therefore she requires treatment which includes chemotherapy and steroids. Her chemotherapy is to take place as an outpatient, at Children’s Hospital in Vancouver for 12 months. There are life threatening side effects with this treatment requiring monitoring both at home and with the hospital; therefore, she can not attend daycare during the summer or carry on her normal routine for now. She will continue to be an out patient unless there are complications with the treatment, which would require inpatient hospitalization.
Avery has been her usual happy self throughout this time and has been taking it all in stride. Every office visit becomes her ballet dancing platform for her next routine and most of the medical stuff doesn’t even phase her.
She has a long road ahead of her to rid this from her body but her prognosis is excellent. She is a tough little girl and she is receiving the best care possible.
Note from us (Little Wonders Montessori Childcare & Preschool Ltd.):
We approached the family and shared that we would really like to support them, not with just our thoughts, words or prayers, but financially as well.
Avery's mom is a single parent, who even though her work is adjusting her schedule to accommodate her, and extended family is there to help watch Avery while she's at work, there will be lot of extra expenses that come with Avery diagnosis.
We would like to ask our Little Wonders staff, families and friends to help us lighten these extra financial burdens that the family might face during this time.
