Fallen Deputy Fredrick Portis Family

Today, we say goodbye to Sergeant Fredrick Portis, a beloved hero, who leaves behind a grieving family, but most importantly his friends in blue. In a short period of time, Sgt. Portis accomplished so much in his career. After graduating from Houston Community College-Basic Peace Officer School, in 2014, he started at the HCC Police Department where he gained invaluable experience in protecting others and touched the lives of his fellow co-workers.

An Illinosian by way of Chicago, Sergeant Portis truly cared about people, and did everything in his power to make a positive difference in the world, alongside coaching a basketball team and mentoring to young youth, indeed his impact will be deeply missed by those who knew him.

In Texas, at Waller County Precinct 3, Sergeant Portis was the primary Field Training Officer. In training, he demonstrated a strong command of patrol tactics and remaining calm under stressful situations. According to Sergeant Portis, it wasn’t about writing tickets or making arrest, it was about representing courage, having integrity, and thriving for excellence in all we do. For this, we can take comfort in knowing that he lived his best life, as peace-maker, a loving father, and devoted man of God.

Now, it’s our turn to pay it forward. We know that he leaves behind so many, but also his cherished son, Jha Barrie Portis, in which Sergeant Portis was supporting him through college. So during this difficult time, let us truly show how we care about our law enforcement families. Let’s continue Sergeant Portis's legacy of giving, by providing financial assistance to his family and get him back home to his final resting place. Rest easy, Sergeant Portis, “We got it from here.”
