Nepal humanitarian trip

Hey everyone--

I spent this past summer completing some required courses for my degree in Buenos Aires, Argentina. While traveling throughout the city and other South American countries, I became appalled at the level of poverty some people live in. I had never heard the term "shanty town" in my life and when I physically saw them covering the hills of Valparaiso, my perspective changed and my heart opened to the less fortunate in developing countries.

I have been given the opportunity to travel to Nepal to work alongside the people affected by the devastating earthquakes near the capital city of Kathmandu. This will be a humanitarian trip centered around providing emergency aid, building relationships with community members, and taking part in community-led initiatives that have the power to improve communities and transform lives.

During my first semester at Pepperdine I learned about The Invictus Initiative, a 501(c)(3) humanitarian nonprofit organization that is unique in its approach to helping those in need. In addition to administering immediate emergency disaster relief, The Invictus Initiative focuses on a long-term strategy that eliminates dependencies created through handouts and replaces them with a community-driven, “teach a man to fish,” sustainable development model. As a result, community members are empowered, utilizing local skills and resources to create positive and sustainable change within their communities. (To learn more about The Invictus Initiative, please visit www.theinvictus.org.)

In addition to relationship building, my team will be assisting with the following initiatives:

-Partnering with communities to assemble and distribute over 100 new water filter systems and service previously distributed water filters
-Working within tent camps to teach health education
-Outfitting schools and community centers with solar energy
-Developing strategies for community-driven entrepreneurial business start-ups

The most important aspect of my trip will be having friends and family praying for safety and guidance before, during, and after the trip. That’s why I ask that you please mark your calendar with our trip dates (December 19th – January 3rd) and keep our team in your thoughts.

Those of us from developed nations, especially in the US, hear so often how fortunate we are. When I look around at all of the abundance, I am grateful-- and motivated to spread it to those who are not as blessed as we are... As this is posted on GoFundMe, any financial help you can offer would mean a lot to me, as well as help lessen the financial burden associated with a trip of this nature. The total cost of the trip is $4,300.00.

Our deadline for contributions is Monday, December 7th. If you would like to contribute to help me cover the cost of this trip, you can easily donate through the website at www.theinvictus.org or mail donations to:

The Invictus Initiative
375 Elati St.
Denver, CO 80223

Please make all checks out to:
"The Invictus Initiative" ...and be sure to include my name in the memo! :) and I will send you the tax ID # afterwards so you can receive a deduction.

Thank you for supporting my efforts and the goals of The Invictus Initiative. Your contribution and support, no matter how large or small, will make a huge difference in our efforts to empower and transform lives!

Also, please be sure to follow the adventure at www.theinvictus.org/blog during my trip!

love,
Stephanie
