Hello, my name is Chris Caiazzo and I am running for Scarborough Town Council. I was born and raised in Portland and graduated from Maine Maritime Academy with a degree in Marine Engineering. After graduation, I proudly served as an Officer in the United States Naval Reserves for 11 years. My wife and I along with our two sons have lived in Scarborough for 15 years.
I have had the Honor and privilege of serving on the Board of Education since 2012. During that time I worked collaboratively with the School Administration, the local business community as well as the Town Council to advocate for the right mix of resources necessary to ensure our schools remain high performing institutions. I worked to make the school budget process more transparent to the community and helped organize the first public joint budget forum in town in many years. My experience as Board Finance Chair makes me the only current candidate who has worked in depth on the town and school budgeting process. I believe this perspective is critical in helping to identify and present meaningful and lasting solutions to our current contentious budgeting process.
Another reason I am running for Town Council is that I feel that special interests are beginning to adversely influence the way our town is being governed. Special Interest groups have formed on both sides of critical issues in our town such as Budget Development, Beach Access and Property Valuations. Groups such as these can be a critical venue for citizens to voice their opinions and take action to affect causes important to them.
Unfortunately my experience with some of these groups leads me to believe that they do not share the "Scarborough First" approach that is crucial to creating meaningful resolutions to our towns challenges. They are not interested in collaboratively and respectfully working with others in ways that benefit all of Scarborough, but rather focus on scoring public opinion points or personally attacking those who do not agree with their positions.
With your financial support I can bring forward my budget experience to the benefit of the entire community. We can continue our work to make the entire budget process a more transparent one. Most importantly, when it comes to seeking meaningful solutions to our town’s challenges, I will continue to take a collaborative and respectful "Scarborough First" approach with all parties. An approach which I hope you agree this town deserves and should expect from its Public Officials.
