Hello Dear Friends:
.I am grateful for all the good things in my life-my family, my health, meaningful work and good friends. And for the privileges I enjoy living in this country-clean water, education, and opportunities for my daughter, Amanecer to learn and grow.
As many of you know I come from a small community in Guatemala where women have few of the blessings I enjoy living in the United States, especially the privilege of education. It's a fact that education--more than any other factor--can improve a woman's life--and the lives of her children.
For this reason I'm making a special request for my birthday this year. During my visit to Guatemala last summer a young woman from my community, Yoselin, age 16, approached me two days before I was leaving for the U.S. with an appeal for help. She is in "colegio" in Guatemala, about the equivalent of high school in the U.S., and can no longer afford the fees to attend.

Yoselin is a bright and motivated young woman, desperately wishing to continue her education so she can go on to attend university. Her family has no resources to pay for her schooling, as her father's work in the coffee fields barely supports the household expenses for Yoselin and her four siblings. Yoselin's dream is to become an accountant and to help her father care for her siblings.
Without education Yoselin, as well as many girls and young women in Guatemala, faces a life of extreme poverty, at risk of becoming a victim of abuse and giving birth to children at a young age with no means to support them. I can't help all the young women in Guatemala but I would like to help Yoselin. Yoselin's school fees are about $3,000 annually. This includes tuition, fees, her uniform, the cost of bus transportation, and books.
I ask you to consider making a contribution to Yoselin's education fund. Any amount is welcome. I would be so grateful.
Below in Spanish is Yoselin's request in her own words. I've also included links to stories about girls and women in Guatemala, including one about a young woman who spoke to the United Nations recently about the needs of girls in Guatemala.
Your gift will make a real difference in the life of a young woman who has very few opportunities-helping to break the cycle of poverty and suffering for girls in Guatemala with the most powerful tool of all-education. It will also contribute to the strength and well-being of her (and my) community, as research has shown that educating women is the most effective way to lift communities and famlies out of poverty.
Every time I come back from Guatemala I am overwhelmed by the stark contrasts between life there and life here and my heart breaks for my people in my home country. It would be the best birthday present ever if I could do one small, but actually really big, thing to help one young woman-Yoselin. Thank you so much.
Yoselin's Request:
