!!! Please check important update !!!
Hello! I am a 26 year old trans guy from the UK who just wants to start testosterone after being out and living fully as a guy for over 12 years. I have faced so many barriers to care, including abusive transphobic family, being kicked out, mental and chronic illnesses, medical negligence, and poverty. I have made multiple attempts before now to start my medical transition both NHS and private, all of them falling through for a variety of factors outside of my control, even being actively sabotaged. I am now happily at a more stable point in my life—although I'm still quite disabled—and whilst my wonderful partner works to support us both, the income is unfortunately not enough to cover my transition on top of all other expenses. I am so dysphoric and tired of not being able to fully live and express my truth. I have planned out the pathway to making it happen, now I need help funding it.
I am on an NHS GIC waiting list (which we all know are several years long), and whilst my GP would be totally willing to prescribe bridging hormones, there is local red tape preventing him from doing so, which means I have to seek private options. I have genuinely considered DIY, but due to my complex health issues it is not a safe nor viable choice. I cannot afford that as it stands either and in the long run it will work out to be about the same cost as the private option anyway, simply more spread out instead of a large upfront amount.
I have decided upon a private option that works with NHS doctors to increase my chance of being able to get a shared care agreement with my GP—which will significantly reduce future costs—the main obstacle being that it is pretty expensive to get started. It will be several hundred pounds just for the initial assessments from both the main doctor and the endocrinologist, this is why I need support. My goal includes the recommended estimate for number of appointments with each specialist based on their prices, as well as things like follow-ups and blood tests, so that I can not only get on T, but stay on it, until I can facilitate a shared care agreement or hopefully be able to foot the bill myself.
Another significant part of the picture is that testosterone is actually indicated to be able to improve the symptoms of my multiple chronic illnesses; it is fairly likely to not just increase my daily quality of life, but it may enable me to work at least part time, allowing me to contribute to our household and potentially afford other kinds of care that I need (which the NHS is failing to provide). Being able to work would also mean that I can support my girlfriend, a trans woman, who has been trying to leave the US for multiple years, so me being able to get on T will be an investment into both of us. I will attach her fundraiser below.
Further reason as to why I really want to be able to work is that, with the way the UK government is moving, within the next few years I am likely to stop receiving the little financial support I currently get for my disability. I already do not personally see that money as it immediately goes towards rent, it is crucial to us.
Additionally, it happens to be that my first wisdom tooth started erupting very recently and there is definitely Not Enough Room for that bad boy, so that is going to be a medical expense a few months from now that we will not have the money for; this fundraiser will in part go towards that when it is needed. Even if I manage to get signed up to an NHS dentist, incredibly few and far between, it will be at minimum a couple hundred pounds all in, travel being a likely expense.
Thank you for your consideration, in supporting me you will be helping me expand my ability to support others too. I deeply appreciate any help I get <3
