Uzoamaka's Trip to Kenya

Hello! My name is Uzoamaka Chukka and I am a second year student at the University of Georgia studying Cellular Biology with a minor in Public Health. Last school year (2017-2018) I ran to be the Outreach Chair of the African Student Union at my university and I got the position! This school year (2018-2019) my outreach project was focused on women and girl empowerment in Eastern Africa, specifically in Kenya. After 2 months of researching different organizations, I found an organization called Pad Heaven.
Pad Heaven Initiative is an organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. It is a social enterprise that produces low cost, reusable sanitary pads using locally available resources for school girls in Kenya. The organization began in 2010 after a school teacher raised concerns of many girls in the school missing class due to their menstrual cycle. The founder, Ms. Florence Kamaitha (pictured above) and a group of her friends started a fundraiser to buy supplies and deliver them to the school in the rural area. After some time, more schools in the area began to reach out to Ms. Kamaitha and her friends for supplies to be delivered to keep their girls in school too.
In the future, I see myself working with different non-profit organizations to empower girls and women worldwide by providing them with the opportunity to build a future for themselves. Whether that be by getting a degree or starting up a business to sustain herself. As an Nigerian-American, I think it is imperative that we extend our privilege to help others reach their FULLEST potential. I am raising money towards going to Kenya to work side-by-side with the founder of Pad Heaven, Ms. Florence Kamaitha, to educate school girls on menstrual and sexual health and deliver reusable pads and other resources to keep these girls in school.
