Donation protected
Over the last 45 years, the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation has been enabling the Sherpas to help themselves, specifically at the hospital at Kunde and the surrounding Khumjung area. While their main focus is on Health Care, Education and Environmental efforts in the Solo-Khumbu area of Nepal, the tragedy of April 25th's earthquake has extended far past the Kathmandu and requires immediate attention. Many villages in the remote areas in the high Himalayas have been destroyed by this natural disaster. The Kunde Hospital is the only medical facility for a large number of Sherpa people covering a vast area. In the earlier years, the Hospital was manned by Western doctors from Canada and New Zealand, but through the efforts of the SEHF, Nepalese doctors have been trained and are now running the Hospital. It is a great success story, and has provided critical care for many Sherpa families, as well as for many Western trekkers and climbers.
Sadly, the recent earthquakes have caused major damage to Kunde Hospital, as well as Khumjung School and entire communities (see attached photos).
It is our hope that through donations such as yours, we can provide enough funding for the rebuild of the Kunde Hospital – and – hopefully also assist with other high priority rebuilds. Another important point to consider is that all the funds used in rebuilding also help with the Nepalese economy. Nepal relies very heavily on climbing revenue and general tourism. Needless to say, these industries have come to a standstill creating huge problems for many families. The multiplier effect of money paid for labour and materials in rebuilding the Kunde Hospital and repairing the Khumjung School will greatly help the broader population of this entire area.
