Hi, my name is Hilary Marrero. I am an 18 year old Dominican college sophomore at the University at Albany. I’m writing this with a humble heart because I’m currently facing a financial challenge that’s putting my education on hold.
Due to a balance on my account for the remainder of my tuition for the previous Spring semester, I’m now facing a hold that prevents me from registering for classes, moving forward with my degree, or accessing essential student services. The total balance I owe is of $3,885 and unfortunately, I do not have the means to pay it.
This hasn’t been easy. I’ve been dealing with this situation since the beginning of the summer break, reaching out to different departments, seeking guidance, and trying every possible option. I’ve spoken to the EOP office, Residential Life, and multiple staff members on campus. I’ve done everything in my power, but I’m running out of time and resources.
The reality is that my family and I simply can’t afford to cover the rest of this tuition. I’m the one responsible for this bill, and as much as I’ve tried to plan and prepare, it’s beyond what I can manage alone.
Over the past few months, I’ve applied for over 10 private loans in hopes of covering this balance. Each time, I’ve been denied. While my family and I meet the credit score requirements, we are consistently rejected due to our low household income which is under $20,000 a year. It’s been incredibly disheartening to come so close to qualifying, only to be turned away because of financial hardship we can’t control.
I’m asking for help not because I want to, but because I truly need it. My education means everything to me. I’ve worked so hard to get here, and I don’t want to give up now. Every dollar donated will go directly toward paying down this tuition balance so I can stay in school and continue pursuing the future I’ve dreamed of which is becoming a teacher.
If you’re not able to give, sharing this with others would still make a huge difference. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Your kindness, generosity, and support means so much more than you know.
This is my last hope. I’ve come too far to give up now. My education means everything to me it’s not just about a degree, it’s about creating a future where I can break the cycle and give back to my family and community.
With love,
Hilary
