On May 16th, Scott was in an ATV accident in his rural hometown of Russellville, IN. After losing control of the vehicle, he crashed being found moments later by a local couple. He was not wearing a helmet. Passing by was a Nurse Practitioner, who acted quickly and called for a lifeline to the hospital. Volunteer EMT's joined soon after.
In acute respiratory failure, he was intubated and taken into the helipcopter, later recieved by the amazing Trauma team of Dr. Jacobsen at St. Vincent's in Indianapolis. CT scans of his head to pelvis returned negative except for fractures to his cheebone. Despite the poor outlook of the situation, for it was unknown if and when he would wake up and be able to breathe on his own, Scott surprised everyone by coming out of a medical sedation 7 hours later in the ICU three times that night.
An MRI of his cervical spine revealed further information that Scott had fractured his C1, C5, and C6. Upon discovering how the accident occured, his neck and spine doctors, as well as his trauma doctors, ICU nurses, and Physical Therapists were amazed. Paralyzation, brain damage and more were real possibilities. "He's incredibly lucky" was heard again and again.
Most likely, Scott will be unable to work for 2 - 3 weeks, should he heal they way it is hoped.
Issues with his Aflac STD policy have delayed processing the benefits he has paid into for 4 years.
Scott and Tamrha moved back to Indiana from Long Island, NY where Tamrha was raised, in May of 2011. Once there, Scott continued working in Tree Care field, joining the Bartlett Tree Care Experts in Carmel, IN. Tamrha, his wife, works as an on-call Homebirth Midwifery Assistant and Educator with Believe Midwifery Services. She has also volunteered within the Indiana Dept. of Corrections for the last 3 years in Chapel Services at two prisons in Indiana. She homeschools their two boys, Aidan Scott, 10 and Ciaran Elliott, 8.
They have 5 cats... two sisters, Coco and Opalina, Two Stripes (who doesn't actually have stripes but the boys say he does so apparently he does), and a brother - sister pair abandoned near their home named Peter and Parker (because Spiderman is Tamrha's favorite Super Hero... you know, her being a NY'er and all).
