New York City hospitals are facing a massive shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the supplies healthcare workers need most to protect themselves and their families from COVID-19. The rationing of PPE in many US hospitals puts health professionals at an exceedingly high risk of infection. Additionally, we are working to reach other essential workers (i.e. those working in sanitation, transportation, and government positions), many of whom do not have access to PPE or the funding to acquire it.
PPE4NYC is a decentralized network of creators working to manufacture and distribute PPE, including N95 face masks, surgical masks, and face shields to those fighting COVID-19 on the front lines. Through donations of stockpiled, 3D printed, and sewn PPE, our goal is to effectively produce and distribute PPE to those in dire need.
We pledge to utilize your donations efficiently and effectively as we deliver aid to the greater New York area. We urgently need your help to meet our goal.
How does this work?
Your donations go directly into our fund for purchasing large amounts of PPE from mass manufacturers, sanitizing the PPE at our central location in Poughkeepsie, NY, and shipping it out to hospitals that are risking their lives every day to care for our sick. We also currently have 7 3D printers working around the clock to deliver 3D printed parts for face shields.
We are in contact with local and national injection moulding companies who are willing to do these moulds for free, but we still need financial support to go through with the order. Once the face shield parts are shipped to us, we will start the sanitization process.
Before the face shields are assembled, each of the parts, including the face shield headband, elastic band, and plastic shield are washed in isopropyl alcohol (>70%) and dried under a UV light to sterilize the equipment from any viruses or bacteria adhered during the shipping or production process. Volunteers in full PPE will then assemble, pack, and ship the face shields to our central distribution location in Brooklyn, NY. Our distribution team will then deliver sterile packages of PPE to those that have ordered, while large orders to hospital systems will be shipped directly to them from our sterilization headquarters in Upstate New York.
Every person working on this project is a volunteer, so we are happy to take any donations to go straight to the fight against COVID-19!
