Do you remember "Def Poetry?" Do you remember the poet named Poetri? He's known for poems like "Krispy Kreme" "Money" and "Dating Myself." I had the pleasure of meeting Poetri and his wife Juren J-boogie Spoken Funk Smith years ago during my LA days. I even took Poetri's poetry class. Well sadly, Poetri suffered a stroke recently and his family is going through it. He is the sole care giver for his wife Juren who is unable to walk, and father to their two young children. Now he has to learn to walk, talk, and eat again.
READ HIS WIFE JUREN'S STORY:
"This past Sunday night, was the scariest night of my life. A very hard time for my whole family. Devin had a stroke Sunday night. It happened while he was driving home after happily getting off stage from one of his shows, with all of us in the car, yet none of us knew what was happening. He started mumbling, swerving, side swiping objects and other cars, all while not really understanding why all of us were screaming, crying, and begging him to STOP. My girls used my cell to call their aunt for help and she called 911. Finally, we were able to get him to pull over and me, being fully disabled (haven’t walked in about ten years), I wasn’t able to do much but pray and give instructions to my girls. I quickly gave the next steps. THE GIRLS had to put the car on break and struggle with their dad to get the keys out the ignition. Being 10 and 12 years old, this was the first time they’ve ever touched the car keys while the car was still on. After all this, Devin was slumped over the steering wheel. THAT, in itself, was scary and especially hurtful for my girls. To see their BIG and STRONG dad unable to help the family or himself was excruciating for them. Just then the ambulance pulled up.
Devin is in ICU at CEDARS SINAI HOSPITAL in West LA. He’s progressing as time goes on. Recent Cat scan revealed that the bleeding has stabilized. As long as there are no setbacks, he’ll be in urgent intensive care for 3 to 4 days. Then in the regular hospital unit for about 2 weeks, before going to rehab for about up to six months.
I’d like to PLEAD with you to pray for Devin, I, and my kids. My whole family. We’ve been going through a lot these past few years; medically, financially, and now a bit spiritually. I don’t know what God has in mind for us. We know he loves us, but what made him save us from a possible car accident Sunday night, to allow my husband to have a stroke and become as helpless as me..."
Poetri is an amazingly funny, kind, generous, creative, charismatic person and one of the nicest most humble human beings i've ever met. Neither he nor his family deserve whats happening, but only God has the answers. Ohhh but faith....
My heart breaks for them. But as we know, God gives his toughest battles to his strongest warriors.
