Welcome to the Swarm Artist Residency.
The Swarm Artist Residency is an artist’s retreat built by a group of Chicago artists. It will be a place for artists to come and do the work they often do not have time to commit to in the midst of three jobs, five rehearsals, commuting and grocery shopping. This will be a space for artists to do only the work they want to do, alongside other artists doing the same thing- all while enjoying a backdrop of beautiful Wisconsin farmland. We hope to send back new works, new collaborations, and new visions to Chicago, which will inevitably make our arts community and our city a better place!
Many of the artists we hope to serve cannot afford costly retreats and vacations. We are hoping to fund this endeavor to provide this opportunity to our participants for FREE or for very little charge. All of the funding for this project will go towards renting space, upkeep of that space, and supplies for the retreat.
When and Where?
We have rented the beautiful Bright Dawn Retreat Center in Plymouth, WI. It is about 2.5 hours north of Chicago, and 20 minutes west of Sheboygan and Lake Michigan. We will have space available from July 6th- 31st. There is a house with a few real beds, a barn with dorm style bunk beds, and lots of room to camp.
The retreat center is owned by a wonderful woman, Mary Anne, who recently lost her husband of 56 years. Mary Anne and her husband grew up in the Logan Square area of Chicago. He purchased this land after collecting enough ALUMINUM CANS to cash in to make the down payment. Since his passing, she wants nothing more than to keep this space running. However, she is a little older and cannot do all the tasks. We have volunteered to help take care of the land and spaces while we are there, even possibly helping out for a weekend or two before July.
What will artists do at this residency?
Artists will work on the project you have not been able to create enough space for! The days will be mostly unstructured for you to work, hike, explore, drive to Lake Michigan, or do whatever you need to feel creatively fulfilled. We will offer some organized activities, some master classes, and will definitely have weekly showings of our work.
How much is this?
We want this residency to be as close to free as possible for artists. We are working super hard to find funding from private donors, grants, and other fundraising efforts. Currently, it is just Lee Stark, Morgan McNaught, Nikki Zaleski and Zoe Schwartz funding this endeavor. We hope that our funding will come through and we can let you come and frolic for free.
Donors can expect a hand made thank you card, as well as some possible special visiting hours at the residency!
