Stop Hanson's Bunyip North Quarry

Donation protected

The Mount Cannibal and District Preservation Group is a committee of local residents working together to fight Hanson Construction Materials' (Heidelberg Cement, Germany) proposed Bunyip North mega granite quarry.

Hanson is proposing to extract 2 million tones of granite every year from a new site bigger than the Melbourne CBD for a period of 70-100 years.

At full production, the quarry would require only 7-10 people on-site and would see 550 truck movements on local roads/Princes Highway daily. Hanson/Vic Roads do not have plans to upgrade the roads at this time.

Hanson has admitted to many social impacts including dust and noise emissions, ground vibrations, air blasts, road damage and alteration of landscape. They want to remove 100+ acres of native vegetation, and their operation plans to flatten 3 hills with a pit 160 meters below ground level.

Within 2km of Hanson's proposed quarry is more than 120 pre-existing homes. The immediate local area supports dairy/beef/bee farms, wineries, precious biodiversity and Melbourne’s food bowl. It's also home to tourism icons,  Gumbuya World, the Tonimbuk Equestrian Centre, Mount Cannibal and the Bunyip State Park - just to name a few.

Hanson's 800+ acres sits within a green wedge zone with an environmentally significant overlay. It is also within the Healesville to Phillip Island Nature link, a bio-link of national significance connecting three of Victoria's iconic ecotourism attractions.

A report by Ecology and Heritage Partners stated that Hanson's site provided suitable habitat for nationally significant species, including the Southern Brown Bandicoot, Australasian Bittern, Latham’s Snipe, Growling Grass Frog, Dwarf Galaxias, the Green-striped leafy Greenhood (Pterostylis chlorogramma) and the Strzelecki Gum (Eucalyptus Strzelecki).

Hanson entered our community under the guise of a pastoral company in 2006 and our group has been tiressly fighting them in the 14 years since. We are now down to the final year with Hanson's Environmental Effects Statement (EES) due to go on exhibition in mid-2021.

Any funds raised will contribute towards engaging consultants to help us present a legal argument as to why Bunyip North is an entirely inappropriate location for this development. In the broader scheme, these funds will go towards protecting the future of Bunyip North and West Gippsland for generations to come.

We thank everyone for their on going support in helping us to protect Victoria's agriculture, tourism and biodiversity.
