On July 22nd, my mother Kris was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma, a rare cancer of the eye. She spent the subsequent weeks having tests and imaging done to to see if her cancer had spread. Thankfully, Kris's cancer has not spread beyond her eye. Unfortunatley, due the uncommon nature of this type of cancer, the closest specialist who was able to immediately take Kris as a patient was in Iowa City, Iowa.
On August 1st Kris travelled to Iowa to meet with the medical team at the University of Iowa for more tests and to determine a treatment plan. After a long day of tests and scans, Kris learned that the mass on her eye had grown too large to safely treat with radiation, and that removing her eye would give the best chance of both removing the cancer and preventing the spread.
On August 31st, Kris will travel back to Iowa City to have her eye removed. Following the surgery, she will need to remain in Iowa for an additional week to receive post-operative care and check-ups.
Kris is a working, unmarried mother of two adult daughters who have given her five grandchildren. Additionally, she lives with and helps to support her own mother, who suffers from COPD and other serious ailments. She works at the printing company that her father founded, which had to be sold upon his passing from bladder cancer 5 years ago. Kris has been unable to work since thie diagnosis, and will likely be out until she recovers from having her eye removed.
Since Kris's treatment will occur out of state, her insurance will only cover a small portion of the large meical bills that she will soon be facing.
We are asking for help so that Kris is able to fully focus on her care and recovery without having the added stress of possilbly losing her home of 28 years, which would leave her and her mother searching for somewhere to live.
Even though Kris is going to be losing her eye, she is very thankful that her cancer has not spread, and feels blessed that she should have the opportunity to spend many more years watching her grandchildren grow and caring for her two rescue weener dogs.
Thank you so much for your prayers and any help you are able to provide!
