On Monday March 6th, 2018, after a full month of multiple tests, Paul was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer: Cholamgiocarcinoma; cancer of the bile duct in his liver. The next day (Paul's birthday) Paul and his sister met with an Oncologist at Swedish Cancer Center. They were told that the tumors in his liver were inoperable and the chemotherapy was to begin soon. Paul was understandably shaken and a flurry of questions flew through his mind.

“How could this have happened?”

“Why inoperable?”

“Chemotherapy treatments?”

Upon looking back at their meeting on his birthday, the symbolism was like a “Rebirth” of sorts. This was his new reality and with his family, friends, and co-workers at his side, Team Paul was formed to help navigate his new journey.

Paul got a second opinion given to him at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and has been receiving his treatments there. With the same results given, tumors both in the right (larger tumor) and left lobe of his liver. He started treatment March 22nd through August 30th, and has been through 2 rounds of chemotherapy (8 treatments per round).

Paul recently has undergone an intense procedure at the UW Medical Center through the Radiation Liver group. The procedure is referred to as “Radioembolization”. A minimally invasive treatment to treat liver cancer and in his case help shrink the larger tumor in his right lobe with a possible outcome down the road of having surgery to remove the right lobe of his liver where the larger tumor exists. So now we wait to see if a positive response from this treatment occurs by having another CAT scan in the near future.

Paul says “I am fortunate to have the family, friends, and co-workers from Mario’s/Mitchells company who have shown me love and support from the beginning of this journey”. He is immensely grateful for his strong family support, including his daughter Hanna and his Medical team.

Financially it has taken a toll as he has had to decrease his hours at work after certain treatments. After 33 plus years as a menswear specialist, he is finding it difficult but necessary to take time off to meet the needs of his ongoing treatments and recovery. The goal of this fund is to allow Paul to concentrate on being able to spend quality time with his daughter, family and, friends.
