Help! We are in Costa Rica and my dear father is in critical care ICU diagnosed with acute liver and kidney failure. We need to get him back to the United States for treatment.
My father Larry, an American Veteran traveling in Costa Rica is very ill and needs your help.
Larry was on a two-week trip with his wife and family to celebrate 34 years of marriage to my mom Karen when he began to feel ill. Everyone was enjoying the trip, but he had a minor fall during a trail hike and woke up the next day in pain. He took some pain medication but started
feeling nauseous right away. We noticed a few hours later that he was jaundiced. We were in rural Quepos, over two hours from the hospitals in San Jose so we rushed him to the closest clinic for diagnosis and treatment. The clinic was unable to say what was causing Larry’s symptoms, but they did say that his liver and kidneys were failing. Larry was there for 10 hours without meaningful treatment.
They admitted that they couldn’t help Larry with the resources they had, but also refused to release Larry due to “paperwork” issues. Our family was charged thousands for anti-nausea medication and an IV drip while Larry’s kidneys and liver went untreated and continued to deteriorate to the point of acute liver and kidney failure. Eventually, we were able to get him out of the clinic and into a car and drive him to a hospital in San Jose where he has been diagnosed with warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia and E-coli. We are testing his bone marrow for the possibility of Leukemia as being the cause of his current condition.
Larry is a loving caring husband and father. His family, neighbors, and the members of his church know him as the go-to-handyman who always volunteers to unclog a drain, fix a door, or rewire a faulty switch. He just recovered from major heart surgery last year and was finally cleared to travel.
Larry and my mother Karen were in Costa Rica because they had honeymooned there 34 years before. Today they have three children including myself who thankfully has been traveling with them along with my husband.
Larry is meant to do more in life, to be there to see his children marry and grow old with his loving wife and see their grandchildren be born and witness his family grow. We all are asking for funds to go towards his international hospital bills and to help us get him back to the US
and on his feet again.
Unfortunately, his financial situation is dire. His VA insurance doesn’t provide for out-of-the-country treatment. In addition to the clinic fees, hospital costs have already gone over $40,000 and climbing rapidly, and he needs a medical evacuation flight to the US, which will cost $60K to $90K. We all are asking for funds to go towards his international hospital bills and to help us get him back to the US and on his feet again. Please lift him up in your prayers that the doctors in the U.S. can provide the treatment he needs, and that we can get back home safely.
If anyone wants to donate from a different platform his Venmo @laurence-stancil and PayPal
@[email redacted] are active and do not take a portion of the donations like GoFundMe
does.
Update 10/8: After being on the phone with the Red Cross, US Embassy and every number for the VA you could think of we arranged to get dad a medical evacuation flight to Miami on Tuesday. At least he will be able to get his VA benefits then. As for now the hospital bill is totalling over $100K. We are filled with so much gratitude from everyone who has donated and shared. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts ❤️
