When I was born, my mom said I was so big, they thought I was 2 months old. I was always tall, even taller than my older brother, out grew my father my sophomore year.
Self esteem was an issue early on...tall and awkward, but on the basketball court I was proud. I had long and strong legs. Eventually I became quite coordinated and agile. After all those self doubts about my height and clumsiness subsided, I enjoyed many years with my body. Then in the early 1990's, my legs started to change, my gait was off, I started to get clumsy again. Years of doctor visits, culminated finally in 1999, with the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
I walked with a cane for awhile, stubbornly pushing myself to exhaustion. Family members suggested I start to use a Wheelchair, I refused. My son and daughter, begged until I finally relented. So in 2008 I got my first wheelchair. I hated it! I felt small In it, my self-esteem dropped in it. Now after many years Of use, it's broken and done with, and I'm stuck at home.
I want to get out, I want to explore. So I had an idea, I will search the web for a COOL wheelchair. It's amazing what the technology is like and how expensive they are.
But I found one, and they make them right here in the bay area.
A very interesting gentleman, who uses a wheelchair, created not only a cool wheelchair, he and his team designed it for 3rd world and War torn countries. An all terrain chair, It's design shape and style appease me and my esteem.
So I'm here looking for donations, to not only fund a chair for me, but also allow me to donate a chair to another disabled person.
