Logan's Fund

In December 2020, 4 year old Logan was referred to DHMC ER after his doctor became concerned with complaints of worsening back pain and leg weakness over the previous few months. An MRI detected a 7 cm mass located on the upper left side of his chest. It grew large enough to compress his spinal column and prevent spinal fluid circulation. Within 24 hours, he underwent spinal surgery to relieve the compression. Unfortunately he required a catheter as the tumor had damaged the nerves that control bladder function.

After 2 agonizing weeks, Logan’s diagnosis was confirmed to be Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. On Christmas Eve, he had surgery to have his port placed and began chemo that same day. He spent the majority of January in the hospital after experiencing multiple complications. On January 19th, he had another surgery to place a feeding tube in his stomach, as he continued to lose weight and struggled with meds.

Tomorrow Logan and his Mom leave for Boston to start treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital. The hardest part will be leaving Dad Shane, behind in Springfield so he can continue to run his business. Dad will be going to Boston to visit though. The hope is that Logan will be there 6-7 weeks, barring any unforeseen complications that may delay treatment. He is going to be receiving proton radiation, as the tumor cannot be surgically removed because of its location on his vertebrae. In addition to radiation, they are going to continue his chemo treatments.

This child will be inundated some weeks. The first week he and Mom are there will mark his 6th round of chemo. This young child has demonstrated a resilience rarely seen in most adults. While kids his age are enjoying school, going sledding and playing with friends, Logan’s compromised immune system, side effects from chemo and frequent medical needs prevent him from being able to see his friends, leave the house much or live like a typical 5 year old. However, his smile, silliness and innate joy for things like washing machines and stethoscopes are a testament to his incredible strength, tenacity and adaptability. This former preemie, who fought for his life once before, is fighting again. And just like last time, he’ll walk away from this with more determination than he ever thought possible.

Can you help Logan and his family? This fund has been formed for the sole purpose to support Logan and the Bixby from Springfield, VT as he battles Ewing’s Sarcoma. This GoFundMe page has been established with the full participation and consent of Logan’s parents. All proceeds will go directly to Logan and his family for their needs.
