About UCR
The Utila Coral Restoration (UCR) project began April 2018. Our mission is to work at restoring the reefs around Utila, which are an essential part of the Mesoamerican Reef System. Our goal is to restore critically endangered populations of the species Acropora cervicornis (staghorn coral) and Acropora palmata (elkhorn coral). Currently only abour 1% of the reef is made up of these two very critical reef-building species. Both species are currently classified as "critically endangered" throughout the Caribbean.
To date we have 2 coral nurseries around the island of Utila. Our nurseries are home to 16 structures, which are currently holding over 1000 fragments of A. cervicornis and A. palmata. We also have over 30 uniquely distinct genetic fragments, to ensure we are contributing to the diversity on the reef.
Since our outplanting efforts began, we have returned approximately 200 fragments to the reef, or more than 300 meters of live coral cover. This would take approximately 30 years to grow naturally on the reef under perfect conditions. Our work is critical to helping these species recover.
Why we need your help!
In 2019, the Honduran government added new legislation which requires coral nurseries to apply for an Environmental License. Our project has always followed all the legal requirements, and this one will be no exception despite the difficulty and costly process to obtain it.
This new licensing process is very expensive, and we have received a quote for approximately $5,000 which includes: fee for the environmental license, bank guarantees, legal representative fees, environmental assessments, governmental visits and evaluations, in addition to the renewal of the existing permits we hold.
This is an unexpected cost for the project, and we do not currently have the funds to cover this requirement. We wish to continue our work on the island of Utila, and to continue our important mission of growing coral to restore the reefs, but we will be unable to do so without this license. Due to the island being closed to tourism and the global pandemic, our normal revenue streams and grants have also been limited.

El proyecto Utila Coral Restoration (UCR) comenzó en abril de 2018. Nuestra misión es trabajar en la restauración de los arrecifes alrededor de Utila, que son una parte esencial del Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano. Nuestro objetivo es restaurar las poblaciones en peligro crítico de las especies Acropora cervicornis (coral cuerno de ciervo) y Acropora palmata (coral cuerno de alce). Actualmente, solo alrededor del 1% del arrecife está conformado por estas dos especies fundamentales que construyen los arrecifes. Ambas especies están actualmente clasificadas como "en peligro crítico" en todo el Caribe.
A la fecha contamos con 2 viveros de coral alrededor de la isla de Utila. Nuestros viveros albergan 16 estructuras, que contienen más de 1000 fragmentos de A. cervicornis y A. palmata. También tenemos más de 30 fragmentos genéticos únicos y distintos, lo que nos ayuda a contribuir a la diversidad del arrecife.
Desde que comenzaron nuestros esfuerzos de trasplante, hemos devuelto aproximadamente 200 fragmentos al arrecife, o más de 300 metros de cobertura de coral vivo. Esto tomaría aproximadamente 30 años para crecer naturalmente en el arrecife en perfectas condiciones. Nuestro trabajo es fundamental para ayudar a estas especies a recuperarse.
¿Por qué necesitamos tu ayuda?
En 2019, el gobierno de Honduras agregó una nueva legislación que requiere que los viveros de coral soliciten una Licencia Ambiental. Nuestro proyecto siempre ha cumplido con todos los requisitos legales, y este no será una excepción a pesar de la dificultad y el costoso proceso para obtenerla.
Este nuevo proceso de licenciamiento es muy costoso y hemos recibido una cotización de aproximadamente $5,000 que incluye: tarifa por la licencia ambiental, garantías bancarias, honorarios de representante legal, evaluaciones ambientales, visitas gubernamentales y evaluaciones, además de la renovación de los permisos existentes que ya tenemos.
Este es un costo inesperado para el proyecto y actualmente no tenemos los fondos para cubrir este requisito. Deseamos continuar nuestro trabajo en la isla de Utila y cumplir nuestra importante misión de cultivar coral para restaurar los arrecifes, pero no podremos hacerlo sin esta licencia. Debido a que la isla está cerrada al turismo por la pandemia mundial, nuestras fuentes de ingresos y subvenciones normales también han sido limitadas.
