This profile has been set up on behalf of Jenesis Scoon:

Sweet Baby Israel was born on May 3rd, 2019. Soon after birth, he was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. This means that the left side of his heart is severely underdeveloped. As a result, he is not able to pump blood, and thus oxygen, to the rest of his body. Right now the only thing keeping him alive is his ductus arteriosus (a fetal blood vessel) being kept open by medication. However, this medication can only be administered for a maximum of 3 weeks, after which nature will take its course.

My family and I, supported by medical personnel and friends, are trying to do everything to save Israel’s life. The options that allow for an increased chance of survival is a series of 3 surgeries or a heart transplant. As Israel is not a US or Canadian citizen, it is not possible for him to be placed on the heart transplant list, leaving us to attempt to get the surgeries done. Unfortunately, the necessary surgeries are not available in Trinidad and Tobago due to lack of resources, facilities and doctors specialized in this area.

The first surgery must take place within the first two weeks of life so we are working on a very limited time frame. We are in close contact with Hospitals in the US but we also need to secure finances in order to proceed with the surgery which has an approximate cost of US$ 250,000 including hospital costs associated with an extended stay in hospital. This is a cost that my family and I cannot afford.

In order to ensure that Israel is able to go through with this procedure, we have come to gofundme to ask for your assistance to make this possible and help save baby Israel.

Thank you in advance for your kindness, generosity and compassion. I am so appreciative of anything you can give. Every little bit counts, just as every moment with Israel is a blessing.

At 10:10 am on the 4th of June, sweet baby Israel passed away.

Though his life was short, it was certainly impactful as he taught us all selflessness, compassion and love. Through him, we were reminded of all the goodness and beauty in this world and that lies within our hearts. He has only changed our hearts for the better and reignited the virtues of Compassion, Generosity, Kindness, Thoughtfulness, Empathy, Selflessness, Empathy, Love and so many others.

As you already know, all collected funds will be given to another child in need. As such, we will be closing off this Gofundme page.

Thank you for your donations, thank you for your well wishes, thank you for sharing, thank you for your prayers, thank you for your compassion and most of all thank you for your love.

We can’t say thank you enough for all you have done. Thank you for fighting for and with Israel and being a part of this process with us. ❤️

As you all know, Israel was born on May 3rd 2019. That means that today Israel has been alive for an entire month. We are so thankful! However, this also means that Israel has gone 31 days without receiving the surgery to keep him alive.

A lot has happened since the last update. We have been in constant contact with hospitals in the US and Colombia, we have been seeking updates from Children’s Life Fund, we embarked on a very well supported fundraiser by hosting a BBQ and we have continued receiving donations via Gofundme and through various forms, from individuals, groups and businesses alike. The generosity and compassion that you all have shown is astounding and it has given us the hope that we needed on this difficult journey.

Israel has been very strong through it all and he is still with us continuing to fight. However, it is getting hard for him. He is now in an incubator in NICU and is on oxygen, which will cause the hole in his heart (currently keeping him alive) to close faster. We have also been told that he has already suffered some brain damage. We found out all of this information last Tuesday (May 28th). By the next day, we were informed that Life Fund had declined our application.

With everything and all of the figures adding up, we were faced with the reality of the situation as it stands and while this has been the toughest decision we have had to make so far, we have come to accept that this is the end of the road for Israel. He will no longer be able to go through with the desired surgery.

That leaves us with the question of what to do with all this money that has been so generously and thoughtfully given to Israel for him to have a fighting chance at life. From the beginning, this has always been a “just in case” and we came up with the idea of donating the money towards another child born in Trinidad and Tobago, or the greater Caribbean region, with HLHS. More than that now, we have decided to keep the options open to give it to a child in need, whether it be for a heart related issue or for another medical reason.

It has been a very challenging period for us trying to navigate through these waters that are muddled with bureaucracy and red tape. It is with this in mind that we seek to help out another child in need by giving this donation towards medical expenses.

As a family, because we have been doing much of this search on our own, we now possess a wealth of information that would be extremely beneficial to any family who has a child with HLHS. Knowing how long of a road and how much of a struggle it was to get all the information that we needed, we hope to give this information to anyone who needs it so that they have a starting place to build upon and do not feel lost if they have to deal with this situation. It is our sincere hope that the next child born with HLHS in Trinidad and Tobago is given the chance to survive without all the red tape.

There is no way for us to express the extent of gratitude that is in our hearts because of all you have done. We will continue to cherish every last moment we have with Israel as he has come into the world and changed all of our hearts for the better.

Please continue to keep us all in your thoughts and prayers.

N.B: We will keep you updated on the child to whom the money will be donated.

We can’t say thank you enough to all of you who have shared and donated. It’s been just one week and we are already at over 11,000. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We are so grateful and appreciative of your generosity and compassion.

We have been encountering many obstacles on the path to getting Israel this surgery, but we have finally gotten some great news.
Israel is clinically accepted to do the surgery at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida!
This is a sigh of relief. Our main roadblock now is finances. While we were able to get a reduced rate through Global Health we are looking at a $150,000 bill that must be paid prior to any arrangements being made for the surgery. Added onto this would be the Air Ambulance cost to get Israel to Florida.

We are in contact with Children’s Life Fund and are hoping for a positive response from them as it relates to funding. If this follows through, that will ease our financial burden a great deal.
Otherwise, we are continuing to take donations via Gofundme , cash donations to family members and we are also hosting a Barbeque next week Friday and Saturday. (See attached flyer)

Again thank you so much for everything you have done so far!
Please keep sharing and encouraging others to donate. We will update you as we have more news.
