Saving Daniel Brooks

UPDATE:
As much as it pains us to say, Daniel has recently passed away. During the transplant process, he got an infection which eventually spread to his blood. His liver completely shut down and his kidneys could no longer function on their own. He then had internal bleeding that the doctors kept attempting to stop, but eventually could not. They tried for months to save his life in countless ways, but we were just told to say our final goodbyes and he passed shortly after.

Our family is so thankful for all the love and kindness each and every one of you has showed us over the past few months. These have been some of the hardest, most trying times on us as a family. My Dad fought so hard to be here with us, but God had other plans. As much as it hurts us all, we are thankful that he is no longer in pain.

Please know that every dollar you sent was spent in an effort to save his life. There are not enough words we can use to describe how thankful we are for all of your kindness and I am so sorry we do not have better news to share. The love we have received from all of you will never be forgotten and we will carry that with us each and every day. Thank you so much again for your contribution here for my Dad, we truly could not have gotten to where we were in this process without all of you. ❤

If I have reached you, I ask that you read this and then please share. I am asking for your help to save the life of my best friend’s dad, Daniel Brooks. He is a father of 3, a husband of 36 years to local school teacher—Susan Brooks, a hardworking and giving member of his community, and a man living with circumstances that he nor his family deserve. Daniel is currently at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL in Chronic Liver Failure and in dire need of a transplant.

Daniel is diagnosed with hereditary Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). He received a Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) surgery less than 2 years ago. He was insured with United Health at that time and has since been dropped and denied insurability due to their claim of “pre-existing conditions” of his hereditary disease. He eventually found an insurance provider that issued him a policy, but has since learned that no transplant hospitals will accept his current insurance. Daniel was given 60-90 days to receive a transplant or his chances of survival will be near impossible. Although open enrollment is currently happening, a change of insurance will not become effective until January 2023. Daniel’s doctors have stressed to the family that he does not have that kind of time—January will be too late to save his life.

I would like to share with you all a heartfelt message from Daniel’s daughter, Megin Brooks:
”A transplant procedure could mean the difference in whether my father lives or dies. It pains me that something like this could happen to him all because of financial reasons and a hereditary condition out of his control. We have exhausted every avenue of insurance, grants, and all else—to no avail. Without your help, he may not have the time we need to produce the funds to pay for a lifesaving transplant procedure. This is not easy for any of us to ask for help. We are a family that gives, not asks. At this point, we are desperate for any assistance we can get as we cannot stand to watch my father’s life be measured by a dollar amount. Please find it in your heart to give and know we are humbly and eternally grateful for your kindness.”
