Este es nuestro papá, nuestro querido Memo. En el mes de junio, sufrió una caída que lo ha dejado inmovilizado debido al dolor en la espalda y piernas. Si bien ya venía presentando una curvatura al caminar, con esa caída todo empeoró.
En el momento se consultó con un traumatólogo, quien sugirió hacerle una serie de exámenes médicos. Se le realizó una tomografía, una resonancia magnética y unos rayos X, estos mostraron una Escoliosis Degenerativa de Adulto. Lamentablemente, esta se encuentra en un estado sumamente avanzado, el cual requiere de una cirugía con carácter de urgencia para poder corregirla, esto le permitirá a Memo volver a caminar sin ayuda, recuperar fuerza muscular, prevenir complicaciones neurológicas y seguir su vida de manera normal.
Memo es un hombre sumamente fuerte que a lo largo de su vida ha superado una serie de retos increíbles. Cuando tenía 17 años, sufrió un accidente estando de espectador en una carrera automovilística en la ciudad de Maracay, en donde vivía con su familia, este lo dejó en coma durante un mes y medio debido a una embolia grasosa, sin embargo, logró recuperarse tras pasar más de un año en tratamiento en el Hospital Militar de Caracas.
Al recobrar su salud, pudo volver a su vida normal y empezó a trabajar en la oficina de pasajes de Viasa, logrando escalar puestos hasta convertirse en tripulante de la aerolínea y posteriormente, tras el cierre de la compañía, no pudo cobrar sus prestaciones sociales y comenzó a trabajar en el Premiere Club del Aeropuerto Internacional de Maiquetía. En esa época, Memo vivía en Los Corales en La Guaira y cuando sucedió la tragedia de Vargas, perdió su casa. Sin embargo, poco a poco fue superando las adversidades y se mudó a Caracas. A la fecha de hoy, se encuentra retirado y lamentablemente, no cuenta con seguro médico. Debido a la difícil situación económica que atraviesa el país, le resulta imposible a su familia costear todos los gastos médicos para su operación.
A sus 72 años, Memo sigue gozando de su personalidad amorosa y sentido del humor que tanto lo caracteriza. Nosotras, sus hijas, Alessandra y Valeria vivimos en Estados Unidos y tratamos de ayudarlo constantemente, no obstante, la situación se complica debido a la pandemia que restringe los vuelos internacionales, haciendo imposible que acompañemos a nuestro papá en este momento. Desde el comienzo de la cuarentena, él se mudó a casa de su hermana, Aura Marina Hernández, quien es la persona que lo ha cuidado y lo ha ayudado durante este difícil momento.
Les pedimos ayuda a todos los que puedan colaborar, bien sea aportando lo que esté en sus posibilidades o compartiendo esto para llegarle a más personas. La meta es de $25,000 para cubrir los gastos de la operación más el cuidado post-operatorio. ¡Necesitamos de tu apoyo para que nuestro papá pueda sobrevivir este reto, que sabemos con el favor de Dios vencerá una vez más!

This is our Dad, our dear Memo; He is 72 years old and lives in Caracas, Venezuela. He has suffered several falls in the past few weeks. One of the falls was very serious and left him needing assistance while walking. He is now unable to walk or stand for long periods of time and also requires copious amounts of rest due to extreme pain in his back and legs.
Although he had already presented a spinal curvature while walking before the falls, these incidents worsened everything. Memo decided to consult with a traumatologist, who then suggested doing a series of medical exams. A tomography, an MRI, and X-rays were performed, and the results showed Adult Degenerative Scoliosis. Unfortunately, his case is in an advanced state, which requires emergency surgery to correct it. The surgery will allow Memo to regain muscle strength, walk without help, prevent neurological complications, and help him to live his life normally again. Without the surgery, he would be unable to walk on his own or take care of himself for the remainder of his life.
Memo is an extremely strong man who, throughout his life, has overcome a series of incredible challenges. When he was only 17 years old, he suffered an accident while being a spectator in a car race. This accident left him in a month and a half long coma due to a fatty embolism. Luckily, after spending more than a year in treatment at the Military Hospital of Caracas, he was able to recover.
Upon regaining his health, Memo began working for an airline company, Viasa, managing to climb positions and move up in the company. Years later, the company was shut down and left him without proper compensation and the ability to provide for himself. Following this he started working at the Premier Club in the International Airport of Maiquetia, where he worked for many years after retiring a few years ago.
As of today, Memo is retired and— due to the difficult economic situation that the country is going through— receives little help from the government, leaving it impossible for him to pay for the surgery and any other medical expenses himself. Unfortunately, his medical insurance has also not gone into effect yet, nor would it be able to cover the costs he is anticipating.
As his daughters and only children— Alessandra and Valeria Hernandez— we do our best to help him financially every month, however, it is impossible for us to cover the costs of the emergency surgery on our own. The situation is complicated further by the pandemic we are all facing, as it restricts international flights, making it impossible for us to travel from the United States to Venezuela to accompany our father and be there for him at this time.
We are asking for help from all of our loved ones, friends, and acquaintances, as anyone who knows us is aware that the well-being of our father means the world to us. The goal for this gofundme is to raise $25,000 USD to cover the cost of our Dad’s emergency surgery, as well as any post-operative care and medication he may need.
