The Backstory
The Rojas family became my own as I lived with them for one year in their home in Maturin, Venezuela in 2006-2007. Their youngest daughter, Andreina, was my first and closest friend and is like a sister to me. With the Rojas’ generosity, love, and guidance during that year, their family supported me through one of the most impactful years of my life.
Andreina is now finishing medical school and will graduate this April. Her plan was to become a doctor and practice in Venezuela, her home and where her parents and grandparents still live.
However, her promising career practicing medicine in Venezuela no longer exists due to the country's current state of crisis. Therefore she has decided to take the United States Medical Licensing Exams (USMLE) to do her residency and practice medicine in the US. It was an extremely difficult decision to make, as she will be separated from her family and her home she loves. But with her education already complete, her fluency in English, and lack of any medical infrastructure in Venezuela right now, Andreina knows this makes the most sense.
Once she graduates in April, Andreina plans to save money for her US medical exams, continue to help financially support her family, and meanwhile afford food and living expenses, all of which is expected to take years at least assuming things stay the same.
How you can help
Please help support Andreina and her family by donating to reach a $6,000 target goal to cover the USMLE Exam fees, with a little buffer to cover part of any additional fees for transcript requests, if testing outside of the US, etc. All donations you make will go directly to Andreina to help cover the following:
· $135 application fee
· $940 exam fee Step 1
· $940 exam fee Step 2 CK
· $1,580 exam fee Step 2 CS
· $875 Step 3
· $320 in fees if testing outside of the United States
· $50-$80 per exam chart, transcript request, etc.
She is an extremely bright, kind, compassionate and hardworking young woman, and I believe in her ability to do great things. Any gift will make a huge difference in Andreina’s life, just as the Rojas family made a huge difference in mine. Please help me give back. Thank you!
