Using nature to pursue justice in Ecuador

Tax deductible
Nature For Justice  (N4J) is a new non-profit committed to helping communities adapt to climate change.  Los Aliados , based in Ecuador, is one our first partners. (N4J's fiscal sponsor is Resolve)

Aliados, is working with 15 local farmers affected by climate change in the Baeza region to implement a cloud forest regeneration program in the buffer area between the Cayambe-Coca, Sumaco, and Antisana national reserves. The project aims to establish a mixed species agroforestry alternative to cattle, planting 9,000 seedlings, including 10 native tree species that will increase local resilience through improved farmer food sources, attract seed-dispersing birds and animals, and improve habitat for larger mammals.

The region, the tropical Andes montane forests, are considered the richest biodiversity hot-spot on the planet, containing around one-sixth of all plant species. Unusual species like the Spectacled Bear  and Mountain Tapir  are found here. Unfortunately, these forests are under severe threat from climate change and agricultural expansion, mainly cattle ranching.

The landowners want change and the funds raised will be to pay for the seedlings and nurseries.

The project can be scaled to have a greater impact due to its location between three protected areas, the project will accelerate habitat connectivity for threatened mammals like the spectacled bear and mountain tapir.  Importantly, this project will create a template to scale agroforestry over the broader 30,000-hectare buffer corridor in the next five years.
