Albert’s Story: A Journey of Strength, Survival, and Hope
My name is Angela, and I want to tell you a story about my younger brother, Albert — a story that changed our family forever, and one that continues every single day.
In 2019, Albert was just like any other young man — full of energy, always singing, always making people laugh. Then came the back pain. At first, it seemed harmless. He thought he slept wrong or needed to stretch more. But as the weeks passed, the pain grew sharper, and something in him began to change. His legs weakened. Walking became harder. And despite countless remedies and doctor visits, no one knew why.
Then one morning, while getting ready for another hospital appointment, Albert collapsed in the shower. He tried to stand, holding onto the walls, but his legs wouldn’t support him anymore. That moment was the beginning of a journey none of us were prepared for.
After seeing multiple specialists, one doctor finally looked at his scans and said the words we never expected to hear:
a mass was growing on Albert’s thoracic spine, crushing his spinal cord.
We were told he needed emergency surgery — and it couldn’t wait.
Albert was taken into a 16-hour operation where doctors removed the mass and rebuilt part of his spine with titanium screws, rods, and a mesh cage. When he woke up, the first thing we felt was relief — he was alive. That day became his Alive Day, a reminder that he was given another chance.
But recovery didn’t end there. Living with an incomplete spinal cord injury means learning life all over again — with patience, courage, and unimaginable strength. Albert faces each day with a quiet resilience that inspires us. He continues therapy, manages chronic pain, and works hard just to maintain mobility and independence.
In the Philippines, the cost of rehabilitation, medical equipment, and ongoing care is incredibly high. Our family supports him with everything we can, but we can’t do it alone.
That’s why I’m sharing Albert’s story.
If his journey moves you, inspires you, or reminds you of the strength of the human spirit, I hope you’ll consider helping. Every donation — big or small — allows Albert to continue his treatment and gives him a chance to live with comfort, dignity, and hope.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my brother. Your kindness brings him closer to healing, one day at a time.
