He was a dedicated member of our local community who lost his life during a heroic rescue attempt.

URGENT UPDATE - March 25, 2026

We are reaching out with a critical update regarding the financial situation for Rock’s (Yan Cen) family. Today, the family received the medical billing from Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). Due to Rock’s status as a non-resident of Canada, the costs for his emergency ICU care and life-saving measures have totaled over $100,000 CAD, with additional charges still expected to be added.

This staggering amount far surpasses our initial estimates. To ensure that Rock’s grieving family is not left with a mountain of debt following his heroic sacrifice, we have updated our fundraising target. Below is the original story of Rock’s bravery and the legacy we are striving to protect:

With deep sorrow, we share that our dear friend and member Yan Cen (known to his friends as 'Rock'), visiting from China, tragically passed away during a recent hiking trip on the North Shore of Vancouver, BC.

While traversing a steep snow slope, a teammate suddenly slipped. Yan and the hiking team leader instinctively rushed to help, but Yan also lost his footing. He fell over 100 meters down the precipitous slope, coming to rest above a waterfall. He lost his life in a brave, selfless attempt to save a friend.

Yan Cen was a person of immense kindness and passion, always eager to help others. His sudden departure has left his family devastated, facing enormous, unexpected financial burdens. Your contributions will directly cover the overwhelming non-resident ICU medical bills from VGH, the required legal and administrative procedures, the costs of local funeral services.

As his outdoor trail family, PNOA is starting this GoFundMe to ease the weight on his grieving family. 100% of funds will go toward these essential expenses, and we will provide transparent updates on their usage.
