URRAdventures Day Camp

What is this about?
Hello, my name is Nelson and back in 2018 I was fortunate to have been hired by a local after school provider in Hawthorne, CA, that entrusted myself and my team to lead 110 elementary school kids on a 10-month long school adventure.

I have experienced many ups and downs with each student and since I have a foundation and experience as an outdoor guide with at-risk youth, the first thing that would come to mind was "I wish I could show these students what nature has to offer. Especially because this is the type of student that will benefit the most from this environment".

However, at the time, my main goal was to finish the school year with a successful program. Now as I am finishing the year and have been making amazing connections with the students and parents, I am at a point wondering how I can give back to this community even more.

My conclusion has brought me to where I am now. Since I own a company called URRAdventures which specializes in taking family and friends on custom outdoor experiences, I am proud to announce that I plan on opening URRAdventures first Summer Day Camp on July 8th, 2019!

What are we looking for?
My goal is to raise enough funds to help lower the cost per student.

Most families have more than one child in their household; therefore, the price per head will add up very quickly, limiting the chance siblings can to attend together.

Who will your donation benefit?
Your donations will benefit students between the ages of 7 and 10 and students that have been eager to learn more and experience new opportunities.

One memory I have was when the students were in awe when they witnessed the butterfly migration back in March. All I could do is give them fun facts about what was happening and why. Where at the same time, I was wishing we were out hiking, experiencing this event within the wilderness while sitting on river rocks listening to the creek flow by.

With your help, we can make that happen!

What will your donation be used for?
The following prices are considering we will be running a 12 student camp for 19 days.

Staffing: $10,216
- URRAdventures student to guide ratio is 12:2.

- 2 staff needed. 4 preferred. May obtain parent volunteers to limit costs.

Gas: $1,309
- Total gas for 2 vehicles. The price is estimated by using the average gas price, the MPG and the miles driven.

Purchasing Gear: $7,392
We normally run groups the size of 1-6 in our excursions; therefore, to be able to host 12 participants we will need to purchase used gear or get the following gear donated:

-- Sit-On Top Kayaks (Avg Price: $500) (Qty:5)

-- Wetsuits (Avg Price: $160) (Qty:6)

-- Camping Tents (Avg Price: $136) (Qty:2)

Licensing: $1,200
- Insurances and Licenses costs

Transportation: $5,600
- Renting 7 person vans to transport the youth. (Avg Price per van per week: $800) (Qty: 2 each week)

- The cost also includes full coverage insurance for both vehicles.

- We are also putting staff through a 3 day training program to prepare them to drive students safely in all conditions.

Advertisement: $530
- Purchase of window logo to apply to vehicles to help getting the word out and printing flyers to pass out.

Expenditures: $3,937
- Any extra cash for the trips we have planned to cover unexpected costs or emergencies. This number is 30% of all expenditures.

TOTAL: $30,184

How soon do we need the donations?
The start of the camp is July 8th of 2019.

I have started the fundraising amount at $15,000 which would allow 6 students with all activities to attend. Once we hit that goal, I will raise it to the next level to allow more students to participate.

To be able to allow 12 students to enroll we would need $30,184 by July 8, 2019.

This goal is very important to us because it means kids will be able to gain experience that normally they wouldn't be able to. Due to either financial issues, lack of knowledge, or accessibility.

Therefore, to show my and our appreciation I will give back to donors from my personal finances with these in-kind gifts I have been able to obtain:

-- For the first $1,000 donations I pledge to pass out two tickets for the Aquarium of the Pacific to two people who have donated up to now.

-- When we get to $5,000 I will give two Indoor Rock Climbing day packages that includes an introductory lesson with parent, day pass and all rental gear.

-- When we get to $10,000 I will give one person who has donated, a weekend backpacking trip for 4 people. (3 days, 2 nights led by URRAdventures guides in the San Bernardino Mountains to a secluded swimming hole filled with waterfalls and crystal clear water).

-- When we get to $15,000 I will pass out one-single day passes for Universal Studios to two lucky donors.

-- When we get to $30,000 I will give out an outdoor rock climbing trip for two people that have donated up to then.

What will your support mean to these children?
Since I started working with youth back when I started my undergrad program, I have been very lucky to have witnessed the benefits nature has to offer to youth of all ages.

Your support will allow us to teach the curriculum we created called “The 5 OLTIE Standards”.  It emphasizes Organizational Skills, Leadership Skills, Team-Building, Interpersonal Communication, and Empathetic Leadership.

Each week we do activities from water related activities, visiting museums or doing education based trips, doing community service projects to sharing weekly experiences like hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, or rock climbing. Finally, tying everything they’ve learned with a culminating 3 day camping trip where they prep, pack and enjoy the trip while under the supervision of staff and experience one of our most beautiful local landmarks.

Who we are:
We opened our doors in 2014. Originally the company was created to provide outdoor experiences to the public and fortunately we have evolved to making the push to creating our first Summer Day Camp!

The creator of URRAdventures comes with 15 years of outdoor experiential educational experience working with youth and adults on trips such as Backpacking, Hiking, Snorkeling, Surfing, Mountaineering, Rock Climbing, and Kayaking.

His dream has been to open a program focusing on immersing youth into the outdoors while keeping focus on an educational structure. With his background in working with elementary to the college age population he has finally hit this milestone.

His background has been simultaneously working with a local YMCA in Big Bear Lake, substituting for an after-school program in Los Alamitos School District, volunteering with a San Bernardino County Sheriff Search and Rescue team and with a Los Angeles county at-risk youth camp and leading outdoor classes with the CSULB Wilderness Program.  These positions have provided him with a wide range of experience including; but not limited to recruiting, staffing, directing personnel, establishing new program activities and expanding programs within the community.
